  • Is there a DVE plug in?

Posted by Richard Scott on August 19, 2005 at 2:00 am

I really love FCP, it is powerful, easy to use and inexpensive but if I have a gripe it is with the DVE or motion tabs. It falls short of what I am used to working on, though it is about even with Avid MC.

What I am hoping for is a plug in that will function like a 3D dve, be reasonably easy to use and look good onced rendered. Does such a program exist? Where could I find it?

    Thanks,

    Rich

There’s 2 DVE plugins in Boris Continuum Complete. Not cheap, but the whole set is fantastic.

Are you running FCP 4.5 or 5? The scaling and aliasing is substantially improved in FCP 5.

I am using both 4.5 and 5. 5 seems better but it still looks kind of gritty to me. I know that I am being picky and so far I haven’t heard a lot of complaints from clients but I researching other options.

If you are using FCP 5, make sure you have the scaling set to highest quality to see the most improvement. I think the default setting is medium quality…the lowest setting being the same as FCP 4.5 and earlier.

On the subject of 3rd Party DVE. For about the same money, which do
you all suggest, the CGM as mentioned above, or Boris FX?

This project was shot on 35mm flim transferred to Digital Betacam. The sequence was uncompressed 8 bit or 10 bit brought in through the SDI input of an AJA IO. When I export the footage to After Effects or Combustion the DVE moves look fine so whatever the problem is it seems to be happining inside of FCP.

Scaling has never looked as good in FCP (or Avid for that matter) as it does in After Effects or Combustion. That is why I use them even for scaling if it is something important enough. I do not have FCP5 yet, so that is based on 4.5 quality levels.
FCP is a GREAT NLE and even does some good basic compositing, but if you are wanting to scale or especially rotate something… I find the “DVE” to be insufficient. Don’t even try rotating on the X or Y axis! But as I said… it’s really a program for cutting.

Hi Todd, Just read your post and see you are at Vazda. Tell Randy M. I said hello.
I used to work with him in Miami at BVI. Is he still a slave driver? ( Just kidding )
