  • Is NTSC-colorsafe still important?

In using PREMIERE, sometimes I use other, smaller, peripheral programs to get the video/audio format I desire.

There have been times when teh program will ask me whether I want to encode a particular video footage with NTSC colors.

Is keeping things NTSC-safe still a wise idea?

I am reminded of how, in web design, web-safe colors were de rigueur for quite some time. Now I don’t know any web designers who observe them… they assume everyone has upgraded their hardware by now… or jolly well should have!

Are NTSC colors likewise bound to now-obsolescing playback hardwares?

Well, is your video going to be distributed via NTSC broadcast? TV/Cable? Then, yes. If you are making DVDs then it is still very smart to do.

If everything is for web only then no it doesn’t matter at all.

Color safe colors for the web involve only HTML code, not Jpegs or video or Flash.

I agree with the others on this thread. I have authored 8 one hour + DVD’s for commercial release this past year, some of which involved lengthy scenes with primary color washes. Though initially shot in Europe on PAL, they ended up as NTSC region zero. The colors often look a little washy on LCD, but without broadcast limiting, the result on CRT’s (and there are still several million out there) was atrocious.
Whereas I found the simple expedient of running the color limiter on the final pre mpeg pass fast, efficient and seamless.
    Hugely reccomended.
Don’t be fooled by computer monitors.
