  • Is it possible to reverse an emitter?

Posted by Shane on April 19, 2005 at 1:10 am

Im trying to create the “kawoosh” effect from the tv show, Stargate. For those of you who dont know, when the gate opens, there is a sudden sideways flush that extends out, then suddenly comes back in and vanishes. Ive found a few emitters that I might be able to pass off as the effect, but I wasnt able to reverse the emitter to make it look like it was being sucked back in from its origin? I hope this makes sense.

Is it possible to reverse an emitter to make it look like its sucking its particles back in?

    Thanks
    Shane

Nope, you have to use another Compositing software to reverse your PI-rendered clip !

It depends on what you mean by reverse. Many of the particleproperties can reverse themselves over time by playing with thier “Over Life” properties – menaing that size over life can be set to grow for the first 30% of their life, spend the next 40% of their time staying the same size, and then spend the last 30% of their life shrinking.

The smae holds tru fro many of the properties.

If you wanted it to whoosh out, maybe consider rotating the layer angle (not the emission angle) 90 degrees, and then try playing with the Weight over life – so it goes one way, and then goes the other way.

These are just ideas. You may need to really play around before you get anything you need.

Also, just try animating the emitter properties such as weight and velocity, so that the values change over the course of the animation.
