  • is it possible to play QT files through intensity pro card to HDTV

Posted by Michael Mk siu on June 3, 2008 at 5:16 am

    Dear all,

I have been using the intensity pro as a means to preview my edit in FCP and it had been working great.

However, I am wondering if the card can be used with a standalone player. Ie, with QT play to output standalone file that is playing onto my HDTV monitor?

There are times when I have exported QT files that I’d like to view on the big monitor. However, I am unable to find any settings that would allow me to send the video signal out through the intensity pro card (as I would in FCP). I am wondering if this is a possibility, where by I just haven’t been able to locate the settings, or something that is just not supported at all.

    Thank you.

    Yours,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,

To send video out via our cards with a Quicktime product, the application must support Quicktime Component VOUTs. Ironically, Quicktime player does not support this.

If you need a quick playout application, you can use the Blackmagic Deck Control application which is installed along with our drivers. You can find this application in the OS X Applications folder.

    Dear Kristian,

Thanks for the reply. I needed to upgrade my driver and firmware and now the Black Magic Media Express (same as Blackmagic Deck Control?) application is available to me.

This is exactly what I was looking for.

Though I do wish perhaps QTplayer or VLC would have this option built in!

Lastly, I wanted to ask – are there a list of codecs / formats that Black Magic Media Express supports (or not support?) For example, I can play most of my .mov quicktime files, but am not able to open up some .mp4 and .avi files.

    Thank you again.

    Michael

    michaelmk,

i’m thinking of getting the intensity pro. but had no luck finding info on supported apps. i’ve been searching for someone that had the same questions, and i finally saw your post.

Do you happen to know if it works with Apple Color? if so, does it preview in realtime? Also, I would like to view standalone video files on a HDTV, were you able to get VLC to work? I’m really interested in knowing if you were able to play mp4, avi, wmv, and others such as xvid, x.264 on a HDTV connected through HDMI, and if so, what player did you use, since QTplayer won’t work. Thanks.

    Ritchie,

We have mainly been using the Intensity Pro with FCP and the combination is working great.. We’ve used it with both FCP 5.x.x and 6.x.x

We have not try running it with Color, but will try to give it a go later this weekend when our edit suite get some down time.

As far as using Black Magic Media Express to play out to our HDTV, we are still figuring out what formats are supported. I suspect only .mov QT files work (we’ve had success with the DV codec and DVCProHD codec), .avi and .mp4 are not playing.

Once we do a bit more testing this weekend, I’ll try to post another update.

    Cheers,
    MK

    Hey Michael,

Just wondering if you ever checked out what the Intensity Pro can do.

I tried this and could not get it to work… Are you playing through HDMI or analog? Or does it matter?

    UPDATE:

So it will PLAY in Blackmagic Media Express no matter what the codec… but to play through the card and onto the external monitor… it must be a Blackmagic acceptable codec (which, by the way, does NOT include ProRes)

    Hi there,

I’ve been having issues outputting video in Pro Tools 8 via the Black Magic Intensity Pro card. Although it outputs the quality is not very high.

I’ve tried a bunch of different videos with different codecs and they all seem to be the same result. Is there a setting somewhere that I’m missing other than the standard setting in pro tools 8? Or is there a certain codec that I must use in order to achieve high quality videos to output from Pro tools?

    Best,
    -Tyler
