  • Is it possible to merge two FCP projects?

Posted by Jim Krause on January 17, 2008 at 1:33 am

I’m editing a large program for a local PBS affiliate at my facility. A PA at the station has been doing a great job logging and capturing the footage. Since there’s almost 30 hours of footage, it’s understandably taking him quite a while to log and digitize everything. SInce I can’t wait two weeks for everything to be captured, I’ve grabbed what media I can and started editing the project.

I’ve been moving media to my studio via sneakernet (a fast hard drive) and have started my own project file. I’ve made sequences, multicam sequences, and multicam clips, etc.

Is it possible to merge two FCP projects? Every time I get a new batch of clips (along with the new project file, bins, and log info, I have to re-connect all of the media and copy and paste in my sequences and multicam clips into the project file from the station. There must be an easier way to merge our two projects. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Thanks

    – Jim

YOur assistant should export XMLs of the bins and then you should transfer the media to your drive via sneaker net, transfer that footage to your main hard drive, import the XMl and reconnect the media.

Thank you very much for the quick response. Since I have his project file, I suppose I can export the XML myself (from his project file) and import it into my own project? I’ll give this a try.

    thanks again!

You can also copy and paste Sequences from file to file, to the same effect.

[Jim Krause] “Is it possible to merge two FCP projects?”

    Yep, this is incredibly easy.

Just have your assistant sneakernet his project and media to your system.

Move the media from his drive directly into the Capture Scratch of your project.

Open his project while yours is still open.

Drag the bins from his project into yours or simply drag the media clips from his project into bins you have already created.

Close his project, eject and disconnect his hard drive array.

You might have to quit FCP to eject his drive correctly.

Re-start FCP. His newly moved media might come up as Offline, simply reconnect the media and you’re good to go.

No XML, No Export, nothing, simply drag and drop. We do this all the time.

Yep. If you have his project file, simply open it up and drag the bins you need into your project file.

Thank you very much. This is kinda sorta what I’ve been doing. I was concerned if this is safe practice, since I’ve been creating many mutlicam clips- which create clips *inside* of the existing clip’s bin. And these bins are what the PA has been adding to and modifying. I’m going to create a separate bin for multicam clips- so they don’t interfere with the bins he is modifying and I am re-importing.

Thanks for your help, and everyone’s too

    Just a little warning 🙂
always copy the new clips to your project and not your sequences to his!!
because otherwise you loose your master-affiliate links which means there is no link between your clips in the browser and your seq.
e.g. you wouldn’t be able to use ‘show clip in browser’ from your seq
    or
changing the name of a clip wouldn’t change the name in your seq
    etc…

is it not good to ask to create master clips when copying pasting 2nd sequences across, then all the browser clips come across properly?

There’s no need to if you have logged all the clips. All the clips retain their original names when they come across so there’s no problem.

    Walter,
When you say drag and drop, do you mean to drag the whole project and all of it’s contents into the capture scratch folder, or do you copy each folder’s content (example, capture scratch, waveform cache, autosave vault, etc.) into each corresponding folder of the main project?
    Thanks, Chris
