  • Is it possible to lock tracks?

Having taught myself Premiere over the last few years, it was with some hesitation that I decided to make the commitment to learn Vegas. I’m glad I did, but one thing that Premiere has is the ability to lock an entire track. I figured out how to lock an event, although it is fairly obscure (either R click an event and select Switches –> Lock, or better, modify the tool bar to add the ‘lock’ icon).

I can’t find any command to lock an entire track though. The obvious work around is to select all events on the track and lock them, but with everything else Vegas has, I find it odd that there is no switch to lock a track, or am I not looking in the right place? Locking a track is very useful when you have an audio or video track just the way you want it, and you don’t want it to be disturbed accidentally while you are doing other tweaking.

Also, the trim command (Control-T) for trimming what lies outside of a selection, seems to only work for me on a hit or (mostly) miss basis. Is there some trick here?

    Thanks very much in advance.

[mrbb] “I figured out how to lock an event, although it is fairly obscure (either R click an event and select Switches –> Lock, or better, modify the tool bar to add the ‘lock’ icon).”

You select ALL events on the track and then choose “Lock”. However, I’ve NEVER seen a reason to do that. Why lock an event or “track”? Just don’t touch it! (Plus, I have Ripple Editing turned OFF so they won’t move “by accident”).

Make sure you do a CTRL-A (or maybe CTRL-SHIFT-A) before pressing CTRL-T. You probably have some event selected somewhere.

Thanks Edward – the main reason I locked tracks in Premiere is that razoring affects all tracks unless they are locked. I guess there is no real reason to do so in Vegas, except perhaps to prevent auto rippling where it’s not wanted, as you point out.

Splitting in Vegas is ONLY affect the selected events. (If NO events are selected, then all events under the cursor will be split.) That’s also why, sometimes, you might press “S” and NOTHING happens – an event somewhere else on the timeline is selected.
