Is it possible to Key out this background?
I don’t think I can do this, but my director insists I ask around to see if anybody has any ideas. I’ve got some footage shot against a blue-white gradient background. It’s all hand model stuff. Now, they want a gold gradient background, but don’t want to re-shoot. Does anybody have any ideas for keying this out? It seems unlikely because this is not a solid color. If anybody has some briliant ideas, that would be cool.

Here is what I just did with the built-in FCP “Chroma Key” video filter.
There are 3rd Party ChromaKeyers that editors on this board prefer as they seem to work easier and better.

But you might give the FCP filter a try first.
Add it and slide the adjustments until you get a clean key. -
Did you apply multiple keys or anything like that? I haven’t actually tried it yet, but it seemed like it would be difficult or impossible. Did you just do normal keying techiques? It looks good, though the fuzzy edges are there because of the DV compression, as I expected even with a solid keying background. Maybe it will work, maybe not.

It doesn’t look bad, but I don’t know if the basic keyers in FCP will get good results.
Primatte would probably do the job in one fell swoop. You should probably open AE and Motion and play around with the keyers, read the help file that comes with them.

If you still want a gradient, just another color, then color correct it and simply limit the color correction to that range of color. Shouldn’t be hard as the hand is very different in luma and hue from the background. Once you’ve isolated the background just change the hue/saturation to get the gold you were looking for.
