  • Is it possible to edit high definition footage with Premiere 6.5?

    Hello everyone!

This may sound like a naive question, but I was wondering if it’s possible to use Premiere 6.5 to edit HD footage. You see, for the last several years I’ve been using my good ol’ Sony DCR-TRV900 camcorder, but unfortunately it recently broke down, and it seems paying for parts and labor would be so expensive that I might as well get a brand new camcorder (though probably not a 3CCD, which is unfortunate). As long as I’m buying a new camcorder, it seems like a waste not to get a HD one. However, I’m too used to Premiere 6.5 to be comfortable switching to new software, and I can’t really afford it anyway. I can imagine that this is a significant problem, because I doubt Premiere 6.5 can edit HD material. But can it at least use HD as the source footage to produce non-HD footage? Or is it beyond its capabilities? If HD and Premiere 6.5 are completely incompatible, is there a version of Premiere Elements than can handle HD? There’s no way I could buy Premiere C4, but I might be able to get Premiere Elements, even though it’s an additional expense I’d rather do without (not to mention the hassle of learning new software after all these years).

Anyway, what are my options, here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Hi Francois,

    01. You can’t use Premiere 6.5 to edit or even render HD.
    02. You CAN import the HD footage to Premiere 6.5.
    03. You can edit the footage but in SD [Standard Definiton] editing, the resolution must be widescreen 16:9 or 1025×576 pixel.

    04. Do you have adobe after Effect with you!? anyway if you have the HD camcorder with you [the miniDV one] you can downconvert it to SD resolution and later edit it in normal SD not in HD.

    05. You can’t capture HD video using Premiere 6.5, you must downconvert the video, it is depending on your camcorder.

    Hope it clear enough…

Premiere 6.5 is NOT suitable for editing HD, the presets are not there. The Premiere CS4 upgrade is under $300, that would be the way to go and that would also get you Encore CS4 for DVD/Blu-ray burning as well.

As Joe mentioned, you may have the option to shoot in HD and edit in SD with 6.5 software. HDV camcorders offer the option to convert HDV > DV via Firewire, so you can record 16:9 DV into Premiere 6.5 direct from camera that way and edit as you always have in SD.
