September 7, 2013 at 1:12 amVolume based SANs don’t allow SAN Locations, and each volume with read/write will have directories, just like an external hard drive, at root level.
Everyone can read media from other volumes, but you won’t be able to load Projects/Events from read only volumes on other machines.
There’s also the option of keeping events/projects on a local drive and all media on the SAN.
Either way, it’s a lot more manual work than SAN Locations can provide.

September 7, 2013 at 2:40 amUsing sparse bundles if you want to, sure.
Sparse bundles offer some advantages, but they are also a bit of a hack in that they weren’t really designed with editing in mind.
People use them with success, for some reason they make me feel funny like I don’t trust them, but maybe that’s just me.
