February 17, 2010 at 3:34 amHi,
I read the thread here that FCP 7 is backwards compatible with FCP 6 using XML to export the project from FCP 7….but when I try to open the project in FCP 6.0.6 – it opens a different project that I’ve been working on for months….and when I try to import an XML file – I get the error message: no translation templates matching the selected XML file were found. Unable to import this file.
Can anyone weigh in on these compatibility issues? I have a huge project on FCP 6 that I simply cannot compromise in ANY way with this new FCP 7 project!!!
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

File > Import > XML will get there for you. Sounds like you are trying to import the XML file as a regular file.

October 24, 2010 at 5:20 pmSo sorry for the very late response…..you probably have it figured out by now! I haven’t ever tried taking a project from FCP 7 to 5, but I’d imagine an earlier version of XML may work….try 1 and 2 and see which one opens in FCP 7.

December 30, 2010 at 6:21 pmHm.. the forum stops at a terrible place. I am in the same boat, and trying to edit a huge FCP project on an overheating macbook is very stressful. I have access to a mac pro today but it only uses FPC version 5. When I try the XML workflow to import a FCP 7 into FCP 5 it asks me for a “translation document file.” Help?

December 30, 2010 at 6:55 pmFile > Import > XML. You can’t just drag it in to the browser or import like a regular video file. You must use the XML import menu.

You need to go FILE>IMPORT>XML. Then locate the XML. Not just FILE>IMPORT.

December 30, 2010 at 11:13 pm…and make sure you are using the right version of XML…it would be an earlier version for FCP 5.
