  • Is Decklink compatible with Leitch RS-422 rounter?

Posted by Hkingy on October 2, 2006 at 4:07 am

We just built a PC system with a Decklink Extreme card and having an issue going through a Leitch RS-422 router. I can control our DVCam, Beta SX, Digi-Beta and HDCam decks in our equipment room, I’m just not getting timecode which makes auto edits impossible. The Decklink works perfectly when connected directly to a deck but just not through the router. Our engineers think that maybe it’s the pinouts.

We have a Quantel iQ and EditBox sharing these machines using this router with no issues. I don’t know the model of the Leitch at this time but was wondering if there are any known compatibility issues with BM and the Leitch?

    Hi Harlan,

DeckLink cards use an industry standard Sony

This is working perfectly with a leitch router. No issues.

Thanks for the pin info. All our other equipment is standard RS-422 protocol as well so somewhere, maybe we have a bad cable along the way. I’ll have the engineers check.

    Hi Harlen –
I can assure you that you have a bad cable, or perhaps you are hitting a RS422 bay first, and the problem is there, before it gets to the router. It’s easy to take the wire from going to the Decklink, and move it onto any VTR (even if you have to carry it into the room) to see if it works. I am sure that it will not. If by some miracle this does work, take any original Sony 9 pin cable, and plug it directly between the Decklink RS422 port and that VTR you just dragged into your edit room. See – it works, doesn’t it.

Bob, thanks for the reply. I know if I go direct from decklink to the serial port on a tape deck, it works perfectly. So it’s definitely something we have in between the PC and the tape decks that’s causing the problems. Our engineers are looking into it and I hope we get it figured out soon! I’ll let you guys know what we find.

Ok, 8 months later, the problem is solved. Our station uses all Quantel equipment and from what I understand our engineers said, the Quantel equipment has reversed pins on their RS-422 connectors or somewhere in line, it’s reversed. So instead of re-cabling the other 3 edit rooms, we used a crossover cable on the Decklink card to the Leitch device and now our PC is talking to all the decks in our rack!
