    Good morning. I recently upgraded my pc because i heard so much talking about CUDA, so i decided to buy a pc compatible with CUDA.

    Here are the components:
    -cpu i7-3930K @4.00GHz
    -video card GTX580
    -16GB ram 1600MHz CL8
    -SSD corsair force 3

    So, i downloaded the latest drivers for my GPU, i installed Premiere Pro CS5.5, i edited the .txt file (cuda_supported_cards.txt) adding my GTX580, i changed the engine to Mercury GPU acceleration and i started some tests. I’ve simply put one video clip in the timeline and i exported it, to see how long the render takes
    But the results were not so good…

    TEST 1:
    Source video: file in 1080p Mp4 H.264, 30fps, 9 minutes long
    The file is located on my SSD drive.
    Rendering settings: H.264, 1080p High Quality, 24fps, Use maximum render quality ON
    Time elapsed for rendering: 7 minutes.
    Average GPU usage: 10%
    Average CPU usage: 90%

    TEST2
    Source video: file in 1080p Mp4 H.264, 30fps, 9 minutes long
    The file is located on my SSD drive.
    Rendering settings: H.264, 720p High Quality, 24fps, Use maximum render quality ON
    Time elapsed for rendering: 2.50 minutes.
    Average GPU usage: 30%
    Average CPU usage: 70%

    I heard about people who exported a 2h long movie in 12 minutes…and i saw these bench https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-580-gf110-geforce-gtx-480,2781-13.html
    why my results are so poor?? 7 minutes of rendering for a 9 minutes long video, are too much…
    I really can’t figure out where the problem is..
    Cany anybody help me to find a solution? Thanks!

    Dont put any files on the SSD, use a seperate disk.
    Speed is also in the disksetup, effects used etc.

    If you didn’t apply any CUDA accelerated effects ( https://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2011/02/cuda-mercury-playback-engine-and-adobe-premiere-pro.html ) then most decoding/encoding processes are not using CUDA. This is a common misconception.

    Now, if you were to apply CUDA-accelarated effects to those clips you’d probably see a marked difference during playback and during render/export. The link you provide doesn’t include any information on the clips and effects used during “render” and so there’s no easy way to duplicate and/or understand the scope of those results.

    Ok, now i understood. Thanks for your reply!

    I thought i could get better results, in video conversion, with CUDA…but i was wrong!
    So, is there any way to get faster results in conversion(I mean another software)?

    Another question: does After Effects support CUDA?

    I assume your SSD disk is for the OS
    Videofiles should be on a seperate disk and never together with the OS.

    Note that the CUDA is actually doing what it can. The GPU usage is higher in test #2 because PP is using the GPU to do the downscaling. Test one is a test of encoding only, which is mostly CPU (as is apparent from the numbers)

    You should disable CUDA (edit the txt file again to make sure it’s really disabled. ) and try test #2 again.

    After Effects does not use CUDA processing, although some effects do (Like Magic Bullet Colorista). After Effects does take advantage of OpenGL so a good graphics card does help, but these preview renders are only suitable for quick draft renders.

    Hi Alberto,

    To begin, the GTX 580 is natively supported by CS5.5, so you should NOT be tampering with the text file, not necessary at all. To see if the GPU acceleration is enabled, in Premiere simply go to Project > Project Settings > General and then look at “Renderer” and it will either say “GPU accelerated” or “Software render”.

    If you want to compare between GPU and Software render output times, then switch to Software (disable GPU render) – again, no need to mess with text file.

    Regarding the test you did – H.264 source material takes the most resources for playback, as well as encoding, so it is going to take a while either way.

    When you mention a 12-minute encode of a 2-hour movie, that could be me. A 2-hour standard-definition timeline will export to MPEG-2 DVD in under 15 minutes. Exporting an HD timeline to DVD is closer to realtime probably, and exporting to H.264 for Blu-ray might take 1.5x realtime, using a Core i7-2600 and GTX 470.
