I don’t think they’re the same thing but you’d need to double check the comm specs from Sony. Big question is why you’d need it? Your HDV will come in on Firewire.

Just looking at our Sony decks. Control-S is a mini jack, R422 is a DIN 9-pinner so right there you have a huge problem.

Woops, pulled the trigger on that question a little fast. If I had read a little deeper I would have seen that the HVR-1500 list RS-422.

    Walter, (or anyone)
Do you have any experience bringing in HDV via FW and it’s TC veracity?

David, I am recomending a workflow and am very nervous about bringing in HDV via FW and then doing an on-line on an Avid Symphony.

Gee maybe he wants to work is something less compressed?

FW in the HD world is not all its was cracked up to be in the SD realm.

We never edit in HDV, our HDV decks are controlled via Firewire, but we convert all the footage to DVPro HD or ProRes. Zero issues controlling the decks via Firewire.

We have two of the Sony M15U’s.

I’m not too sure, but is control s a replacement for control l or lanc control?

If so, there must be a control s to usb adapter out there somewhere that would enable better logging. (that is if you haven’t got RS 422 control)

Logging through firewire is way too slow in FCP (I just usually capture the whole tape via capture now). I set up an AVID logging station (for M100) with a camera and lanc adapter a few years ago that worked great. Cheap logging station.

Not an issue here with our DV and HDV decks. Yes, it’s slower than RS-422, but nothing that would make me want to capture entire tapes and deal with that later.

Oh. I’d shoot less compressed then.

Not being an HDV user, I was under the erroneous impression, which you have now cleared up for me, thank you, that HDV comes in via Firewire and then one converts the MPEG2 locally to a more useful format. But you seem to be saying the MPEG2 is coming in via a different spigot implying a hardware i/o is in the pathway. I missed that in the OP.
