  • Is Cinema 4D the best program for architectural modeling?

Posted by Landarch95 on September 7, 2005 at 5:04 pm

I am a landscape architect and planner. My company wants to use 3D modeling for presentation purposes for various projects showing commercial and residential site plans. We are currently evaluating several different programs to use. Is Cinema 4D the best program for architectural modeling? What about Lightwave, Maya or 3D Studio ? Thanks!

To be honest, none of the programs you listed are best for architectural modeling. For that you’d be better off with a more CAD-like program such as Sketchup, Archicad, VectorWorks, FormZ, etc. Many people use these in conjunction with Cinema for animation and rendering.

So at your studio your are not using any 3D construction or CAD program right now?
How do you deliver concepts and final layouts to your clients? Just “old style” (on paper)?
If you already have any 3D data within a construction software, it’s just a matter of data exchange and surface setup, lighting and rendering in a specialized software such as Cinema 4D.
Adding vegetation (trees, bushes etc.) and other objects such as buildings and people to that setup is no problem with Cinema 4D or any other 3D software.

    Kind regards,

I have been using c4d in conjunction with CAD software for arch. presenatations for quite a while now and I would recomend it.
In addition recently Maxon went to bed with archicad and produced a plugin for data exchange. considering that some of your clients are probably using archcad, c4d would be a goer.
As to actual modelling architecture (site plans, or buildings) it is possible. However I would consider a cad package for modelling (accuracy etc.) and c4d purely for rendering / animation.
