  • Is Chroma Keyer broken?

Posted by Tom Brooks on June 4, 2008 at 5:24 pm

When I use one instance of Chroma Keyer, it works as expected. When I add a second Chroma Keyer effect to the clip, the first CK is disabled and only the second one works. Other keyers, such as Blue/Green Screen and Color Keyer work as expected with multiple instances. Any idea why one specific effect could be broken and not others and an approach to fix it? I have a few third party plug-ins, not many. Since I don’t key that often, I don’t have much to go on as to when this breakage might have happened. Thanks.

FCP 6.0.3/QT 7.4.5 has introduced a number of problems with chroma keying software with Kona and other 3rd party video hardware. It even affected LiveType and other alpha channeled programs (fortunately not Photoshop)… especially if you vary the transparency as well. Many things simply don’t show up. In the case of Livetype… one works. Put another one above it results in only one of the two working.

We are having major issues with many keyers on our 8-core Mac pro. Our old G5 and Intel MacBook Pro aren’t affected. We have reported this and red Giant has confirmed the same problem on a quad Mac Pro. Once you have issues, most keyers all have the same problem. We’re still troubleshooting this, as is AJA and Red Giant.

    Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful…

Thanks for the input guys. I’ve found a couple workarounds but I’d just like to see that chroma keyer work the way it’s s’pose to. If I can’t apply multiple instances, the settings with just one get pretty aggressive.

Is the Kona LHe driver likely to have any impact on this trouble? I have not tried uninstalling/reinstalling that yet.

As I said earlier, all was good up through FCP 6.0.2 & QT 7.4.1. All the keyers worked then…
