  • IPTC metadata when importing stills

Posted by Paulo Jan on April 26, 2007 at 12:25 pm

    Hi all:

I’m working on a project with a relatively large amount of B/W stills of historical events (think Ken Burns style documentary), and I’m wondering if there’s a way to make FCP import the IPTC metadata of the pictures and place it in any of the “comment” fields. Of course, I could always manually copy/paste it, but it would be nice if it was done automatically.

ITPC Metadata is specific to the RAW format, FCP really has no use for it, it won’t transfer at this time. Maybe one day if there’s demand for it. But to be honest, I don’t see how I’d use that info in FCP. I’m using Aperture to catalog all my photography. It’s great there. But when I export those for use in video, at least to me personally, the ITPC metadata is just not needed anymore. But it’d be a cool feature to see one day.

Well if I was going to nitpick (and obviously I am!) I’d have to say that IPTC data is by no means specific to the RAW format, its also in the JPEG, TIFF and PSD formats, and possibly more … I believe its in AVI files too, so it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine that it might be capturable by FCP. But no, as it stands, that data isn’t captured. And I’d also agree that that might be a nice feature to see in a future release.

I say it’s a RAW thing, only cause I’ve never seen it very seriously used anywhere but in professional digital RAW photography. I know it’s avaiable in other grahic formats, but I’ve just never seen it exploited like it is in RAW photography. That’s all.

hey, ya know I was just nitpicking right? 🙂
yeah IPTC is primarily a news thing, has been used extensively by photojournalists for years … of course these days everyone is shooting RAW so it seems like thats where its exploited most these days, but yeah, its been around a long time.
