  • IPS Monitors – 6 bit A-FRC Good Enough?

Posted by David Bitterman on June 25, 2012 at 2:48 pm

I’ve been looking for reasonably affordable IPS Monitors in the $250-$400 price range. I’ve had a couple of video editors suggest the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM and the HP ZR2440w. The Dell is a little more in my budget, but doing further research I’ve found that they are both very similar (maybe actually identical LG panel?) 6 bit A-FRC panels that use frame/pixel averaging to achieve their colors. I’ve also found that it’s incredibly difficult to find any true 8-bit IPS panels in this range.

Can anybody help me out and tell me if the 6 bit is still a good low budget monitor? I’ve heard the newer eIPS technologies have gotten much better with dealing with banding and other issues that may arise. Are there actually any 8 bit panels in my price range anyways? (hoping to spend a max of $300 for the monitors, though I would go a bit higher if necessary).

Also, what are your opinions of 16:9 vs 16:10?

Any and all help is much appreciated!

    Hello David,

I did my research too. I got U2410 recently but I am planning to return it due to heavy brightness. Leaving it, the only options in the budget range are U2312HM. True 8 bits are expensive and slowly getting replaced with LED back lighting.

Only 24″ come in 16:10 – You may have to move your head hear and there. I felt it little big for my view. All 23″ come in 16:9. If you do more of layers and want to have the extra bit of a screen then 16:10 is the way to go.

I would suggest to check it out for the size and go for it.

    Cheers

    Thanks

HP zr2440w. I have one and I love it. Honestly it looks very good, has a nice set of connections, and is easy to calibrate. You won’t be disappointed.
