    Hi Gang of Experts:

I am editing a demo reel and some of the clips were downloaded from Itunes to an Ipod. I need to get that material onto my computer, i guess converted to another codec to be compatible in FCP.

when I load the clients IPod, it gives me a list of the TV shows but they are shaded and ask for me to authorize this computer from items purchased from Itunes store. What is the best work flow for getting these purchased videos into FCP, so I can edit the clips effectively?

My question: do I have to get the owner’s ipod user name and password in order to download these videos?

    Thanks so much.

Videos sold in the iTunes store are protected with DRM and cannot be converted or edited. Even if you have permission, there is no way to remove the protection. You’ll need to find some other way to do this.

So basically what you are saying is that your “client” wants you to use copyrighted material.

Does your “client” have legal documentation saying he/she has permission to use this copyrighted material.

This “client” was told by the production that they wouldn’t be giving her a copy of the project for use as a demo reel. So in those cases people have to resort to recording it off TV, or buying the DVD. I personally HATE productions that do that. “Oh, we don’t give out copies. Tape it when it is on TV,” is what they always say.

I told Paula this wasn’t possible…I guess she just wanted confirmation.

Honestly I had no idea it was illegal. I was just trying to figure out if there was a way to edit the material since the person hiring me to edit there demo reel had worked on these TV shows.
Evidently they had someone do this for them the past. Thanks for setting me straight.

And Shane – my apologies for going past your advice..I didn’t put it all together. I should have known better!

    Best,
    Paula
