iPad export settings
Posted by Bruce Mitchell on May 26, 2010 at 11:37 pmAfter looking at the iPad specs I thought I had made a good PP CS3 preset for exporting specifically to the iPad, whose display is 1024×768.
Format = H.264
NTSC, 1280×720, 29.97P, Main Profile, Level 3.2
VBR, 2 pass, 6Mbps target, 10Mbps max
AAC stereo audio at 48k and 160kbps
MP4 multiplexing and iPod streaming compatibilityUnfortunately, I don’t have an iPad so I can only rely on the feedback I’m getting from my customer, but he’s saying that iTunes is transcoding the file and changing the resolution to 960×540 before placing it on the iPad.
Does anyone have a good setting or information on optimizing ouput for for the iPad?
TIA,
Bruce…

May 26, 2010 at 11:49 pmHi Bruce,
I’m not sure where you are getting the bitrate figure, but that’s way over 90% of the users connection, unless we are talking about video for an app.
I usually go for the average DSL speed, which roughly translates into 900-1000 Kb/s (including audio and video). And of course, that’s
still too much for most 3G connections.Yes, 960×540 is what you’ll get through iTunes so you’ll get a bit of scaling. I should note that the iPad is very good at scaling.

May 27, 2010 at 12:08 amVince, thanks for the info and sorry I didn’t specify that this setting would be for standalone files loaded onto the iPad so streaming isn’t involved (although I set the streaming option to iPod just for compatibility purposes).
One online article that gave me a starting point was this one:
https://digitalcontentproducer.com/videoencodvd/revfeat/encoding_apple_ipad_0420/
Here he shows various parameters from several different file resolutions. One of them is a 720p file downloaded in iTunes and running at about 4.1Mbps.So perhaps I was incorrect in saying “optimum” setting. I’m really looking for the setting that’ll produce the absolute highest quality standalone file for playback directly on an iPad.
Thanks again,
Bruce…

June 21, 2010 at 4:57 amI do have an iPad and I tried your settings for you. iTunes would not sync the file to the iPad and returned “… the movie was not transfered because it cannot be played on this iPad…”
On the other hand, I have been using:
H.264, NTSC, 1024X768p, 29.97
Baseline, Level 3.1, VBR 1Pass
Target 2.04, Maximum 2.31
AAC, Stereo, 48kHz, 128kbps
MP4 multiplex, iPod stream
The iPad plays this just fine and the quality is very high. I have not tried to go higher to see what’s the absolute highest quality I can get because this is quite good and I don’t want to have a larger file size, but if you have something else you want to try, email me and I can test it for you. -

January 15, 2012 at 4:48 pmHi,
I am hoping that you could help me with my video issue. I have a Canon EOS Rebel T3i (EOS 600D). My objective is to shoot video and then down load it to my ipad2. I want to utilize imovie to do some basic editing and add some music.
I am new to video and am not able to get itunes to import the video. If you have any other suggestions on how to best accomplish this it would be appreciatted. My main objective is to post video to utube.
Thank you,
Joe

January 16, 2012 at 5:05 amHi Joe
This is an Adobe Premiere forum, not an imovie forum. Unfortunately, I don’t have imovie so I can’t help you there. Do you have Adobe Premiere?

January 16, 2012 at 2:23 pmI do not have adobe premier. I am open to suggestions for software that I can utilize for both photo and video editing. My main objective is to be able to edit photos and video quickly and upload it to utube so that I can market my clients homes more effectively.
Thank you for your reply.

January 17, 2012 at 5:08 amJoe,
There are lots of entry level video editing software packages. many of them are built in to the operating system. I’m a PC guy, so i don’t know much about macs, but if you use a PC, then even the built-in windows video editor will do a decent job. i’m sure mac os has something similar. your problem then becomes to get it into a format that your target can read. before, you mentioned ipad and now you’re talking about youtube. these are two different things and while some formats can be read by both, many cannot, so you may end up having to make two versions of your movie – one for each. i suggest you play around with the export settings on your editing software (start with either .mpeg or .mp4 as they will commonly play on anything). if you really can’t get anything to play, then you can always use another piece of software to convert your movies to the right format. there are a few of these and they are cheap or even free. two good examples are Wondershare and Pavtube, both of which have presets for just about anything you want to display on, including ipad and youtube.

January 18, 2012 at 7:09 pmThank you for taking the time to help me out. I will look at what is available with my cannon software and continue from there. Hope that I can ask a few more questions if I get stuck along the way.
Happy New Year!
