Please forgive the lack of background knowledge on how AJA works… is will it be possible or efficient to capture NTSC to ProRes 422 directly through an Io LA? Or would we need the Io HD for that?

My understanding is that you will be able to select it as you would any other codec (DV25, DV50, Uncompressed) and it will encoded as it is captured through your Io.

Thanks. I guess it’s clearly not encoded by the Io. I’ll assume then that it’s sending uncompressed to the Mac which converts to ProRes. Perhaps “AJA Sales Department” can confirm this?

    Hi,

The Io, Io LA, and Io LD, do not have the Apple ProRes 422 codec in hardware, so that’s correct, any encoding is done on the CPU. The Io HD does contain the ProRes 422 codec in hardware, and will do HD and SD, whereas it’s predecessors are SD only.

    Thank you,

Thanks, Sales. I’ll assume hardware encoding is a lighter load on the system, but it’s good to know it’s usable both ways.

I was looking for a spec from Apple on this issue of CPU encoding… I don’t think that spec has been estabilshed yet.. i.e. might not work on a G4 for example… dunno…

It’s a fabulous codec though…. incredibly clean video from what was shown at NAB.
