  • IO Exp – HDMI & psf format?

Posted by David Jahns on May 31, 2011 at 6:52 pm

I have an IO Express, connected to a Panasonic Pro plasma (TH-50PF20u) via HDMI.

It works fine in every format except 1080psf23.98, which is the format we use most often. 1080i29.97, 1080i50, NTSC, PAL, 720p59.94 – all of those work fine, but when set to 1080psf23.98, the monitor says “NO SIGNAL”. Hell, it even does 1080p23.98 & p24 fine, but not psf. And, of course, that’s the format the Avid outputs when working in 1080p24. What the hell?

It works fine when connecting via component analog – just not HDMI.

Anyone else have this issue? I have another monitor that I know works in psf23.98 via HDMI, so I can move stuff around and troubleshoot, but I thought I’d throw this out there and see if anyone else knew of this issue.

    Thanks!

    UPDATE:

I have confirmed the monitor is capable of receiving 1080psf23.98 via HDMI – it works fine when going through an SDI to HDMI converter, so it looks like it’s the IO Express that is not outputting a PSF signal via HDMI. Will test with another IO unit and see what happens.

Most monitors do not accept PsF signals via HDMI. Monitors tend to accept true progressive (p) signals via HDMI. While you state that you are using a converter that takes SDI and converts it to HDMI, it is quite possible that the converter actually outputs true progressive via the HDMI. This is possible with the AJA HDP2 Mini Converter for example; it can accept a PsF signal, but then output a true progressive signal.

If you need additional assistance with your configuration, please consider contacting AJA Technical Support via phone or email between 9am and 5pm PST.

The AJA does the Job perfekt, with DVI to HDMI Adapter as well. The Blackmagic SDI to HDMI Cnverter does the same Job perfekt, with one difference, the Samsung Monitor says 1920 x 1080 24p. With the AJA, the Monitor says 1920 x 1080 60 Hz.

AND, if I check the button “use 1080p instead of 1080 psf” in the Blackmagic Decklink Control Panel, it works without any converter. Thats a great deal.
