“invisible skateboard” video

August 4, 2006 at 3:29 pmJust a quick question… A friend of mine showed me this video and asked me how they did it.. I had some ideas and thoughts regarding keying and stuff, but they did a very impressive job of “rebuilding” the background where the skateboards were keyed out. Anyone who has a few spare minutes or is just bored at work, take a look at:
https://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6396990712930217422&hl=enAny ideas on how this was accomplished so seamlessly? I’d love any insight. I’ve been using AE for a while now, and haven’t done too much with keying/compositing, so I’m kind of a noob in that regard.

August 4, 2006 at 4:16 pmThat’s a very impressive cloning job. I hope they use something like mokey to do the heavy lifting. Nice concept.

August 4, 2006 at 5:48 pmYes, looks like a massive paint/ roto job. Not impossible with some clean plates/ photos to fill in the gaps, just a lot of painstaking work.

August 4, 2006 at 6:21 pmThey used a motion control camera. One pass with operator control to follow the skaters. A 2nd pass with the movement data from the first pass gives them a clean pass to comp with. Easy as pie for post.

August 4, 2006 at 7:51 pmI can imagine that painting the shadows back in underneath their feet was a bit of a PITA. Good stuff, though. Spike Jonze, workin’ it.

August 5, 2006 at 3:04 pmoh, yeah. of course. Tony Hawk paired up with febreeze and also eclipse gum, and they manufactured a board for the future… one where skaters can’t see it but still don’t know how to skate.

August 5, 2006 at 9:15 pmFrom the Google video poster: “The skaters were filmed skating on green boards, then the boards were edited out.”
Motion control cameras are pricey even to rent, is that really likely here?
