I am trying to revive an old AE project created on a pre Intel Mac in 2002. It heavily used Invigorator to generate realistic looking coins that could spin and show (flat) front and back and edges. It thus mapped an image onto a simple extruded shape (circle). I now have AE CS6 on MacPro 5,1. I can update the AE project via CS4 (trial) but I cannot find working Invigorator plugs and I cannot get any response from Zaxwerks. Any suggestions for a (hopefully) free alternative?

CS6 saw the debut of the ray-traced renderer. If you had an NVIDIA card in your PC, it worked reasonably well. I don’t recall how it worked if you had an NVIDIA card in your Mac. Regardless, if you switch your comp to the ray-traced renderer, you can extrude vector shapes like shape layers and text (texturing it well might be a bit trickier). So, that’s your free option.

Alternatively, I believe you can get a free trial of Element 3D from VideoCopilot.net (It’s a really worthwhile plugin to purchase if you like doing this sort of thing– it’s kinda the industry standard for doing 3d inside older versions of AE like CS6.)
