Inverse Kinematics: Dan Ebberts
Posted by Jarod Gibson on May 21, 2007 at 12:05 amHi Dan!
I am trying out your inverse kinematics recipe from Motionscript and for some reason, the hand will not stay attached to the arm. It is certainly controlling the upper and lower arm which remain attached properly but like I said, the hand does not stay attached.
I’m using AE 7.0
What am I doing wrong?thanks,
Jarod

May 21, 2007 at 12:17 pmHi Jarod,
The hand does become detached if you move it far enough that the arm pieces can’t reach it. Is that what you mean, or are you seeing something else?

May 21, 2007 at 5:46 pmI am seeing something else.
For example, if I were to replicate the arm you animated on your website, the hand would not stay attached even that much. It’s like it’s held together with loose threads….
Thanks!Jarod

May 21, 2007 at 6:41 pmI’ve noticed the following issue with Dan’s script:
the script assumes that the solution for the initial pose is 0 degrees for both limbs, the standard pose of the model should be a fully stretched leg.
so if you design your leg to be a bit relaxed (bent a few degrees), there will be an error.

May 21, 2007 at 6:45 pmThat’s true. I have a newer version that eliminates that problem. I’ll have to dig it up and post it.

May 21, 2007 at 11:47 pmI’ve been working on a ‘super’ inverse kine setup with toes that automatically bend while they’re still touching the floor, and feet that don’t disconnect from the limbs.
I’ll post it one of these days for some feedback.
My wife is creating an animated short and I thought: why not rig the entire model ?There’s a lot of stuff going on actually: gyroscopes (the head stays level), there’s a point of interest for the eyes and head, and I even experimeted with automated inertia in the character’s hair 😎
Promise I will post as a case study, so we can all go nuts tweaking the ‘bionic expression woman’

May 22, 2007 at 1:11 amThanks guys. I will try starting the arm at 0 degrees. Can’t wait for those other expressions you mentioned. Thank you both!

March 12, 2009 at 4:00 pmHi Dan,
Thanks for your great IK-tutorial!
I have one question though; is there any way to set up the limbs with constraints instead of setting the rotation to either cw or ccw?Regards,
Michiel
