I’m using Sony Vegas 11 Pro and wish to make a 5~10 second intro to my video and seek help from the brains-trust here.

I have a static image that I wish to highlight and move certain parts of, but I’ve no idea where to start on this as my trial-and-error approach with the standard effects isn’t getting me anywhere.

Even explaining the effect Im after is difficult. The best professional/commercial example of what i’m lookinf for is the intro for ABC (Australia) News. Link below is one of their on-line news stories which features the effect through the opening few seconds.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-06-06/astronomy-expert-on-transit-of-venus/4054810

Any guidance you could give to kick-start me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks
    Ian (novice!)

That was likely done in Adobe After Effects, but you can come pretty close using Photoshop (or GIMP) and Vegas.

You need to make each element of the graphic in it’s own layer in Photoshop.
Bring the PSD file into the timeline “Across Tracks”.
Animate each track with event pan/crop.

Here’s something that I did using the above process.
    Marauders Map

Each footstep is a different layer in Photoshop, each footstep event is offset by one second on the Vegas timeline and each event has a fade-in and fade out.

The intro effect is not easy, it takes quite long to make it I think.
    https://www.videotour24.com check this out.
You can get free intro templates there, and customize it.
Maybe you like one of them or ask to make your intro.

Thanks Stephen And Mel. From my dabbling I began to feel it was something outside the normal scope of SV.
