Interview clip – color and adjustment
Dear CC-forum,
I have a video-clip and need to adjust the background color and to cut the edges.

https://reels.creativecow.net/film/videoclip480I cannot get chroma keyer to do the trick due to the quality of the image (or me doing it wrong). Short of randomly trying out different color settings and shooting in the dark, could someone direct me to the “correct” way of making the background black.
And perhaps also a few guidelines of how YOU (semi-)pro’s would tune the colors of the interviewed person nicely. This is of course situation-specific and a matter of individual taste but still.
Also, for adjusting the edges of the video-clip. I can apply 2x cookie cutter (rectangular, feather edges, & overlapping) – but again – is this really the “correct” way of doing this?

Can you post the clip as a file so that we can download it and play around with it? What you really need is a Luma Key which Vegas Pro doesn’t have but Boris BCC plug-in does. I’d still like to play around with the Vegas chroma keyer and masks and see what I can do,

Best result I have gotten is using the chroma keyer – but that leaves a white aura around the interviewed person, which is simply too broad to accept.Could you post a link for the Boris BCC plug-in so I can see/read about it? 🙂

Hi John,
Can you explain what a Luma Key is? I’m not familiar with it and the “about” file on it doesn’t really explain it very well but I’m interested in learning about it.

Luma key does it’s keying based on luminance values rather than color (which is what “chroma” key does) so Luma key is perfect for keying out a while background or black background which has very extreme luminance values to work with.

Is that the source video that you shot?
That’s really low quality Sorenson 3 video at 15fps 3Mbps. That’s never going to key well. Also your subject is wearing a gray and white speckled shirt and has white teeth and white in her eyes, so you’re going to have to use two masks to avoid keying out the white in your subject when you key out the white on your background. There is a reason people use a green screen.
You should use a garbage matte around the subject so that you only have to key the white that is closest to her. This is accomplished with a negative mask. Use the Chroma key to get as much of the white out as possible and get a clean edge. Then place another copy of your footage on a track above and use a positive mask on the inside of your subject so that you only have to key the edges. Luckily she is standing pretty still.
The problem will still be getting a clean edge because of the extremely low quality video. Sorenson is a delivery format not an editing format.

I think a black background won’t be OK, considering her Sweater is black and there isn’t back light.

A very nice result, damn! Any chance you could link me the file?That would for sure be an ok solution for the video I’m putting together. But still intrigued by how well this Boris BCC could manage a black background though 🙂
