  • “Interpret Footage” function no longer works (After Premiere Update)

Posted by Kyle C. on December 13, 2012 at 9:51 am

I’ll try to describe my symptoms as best as I can.

I’m working on a Mixed Martial Arts highlight reel (basically some epic music mixed w/ great fight footage) on Premiere.

Most of the footage is from the early 2000’s, thus is still in NTSC 4:3 (square) format. To better match YouTube’s video frame, and for aesthetics in general, I threw these clips into an NTSC 16:9 (widescreen) sequence and modified the Project Files to be widescreen as well. I realize that forcing my ‘square’ 4:3 footage into a widescreen format might not be the best for vid quality, but Premiere Pro is so good at keeping quality loss to a minimal that I didn’t mind it and actually liked the results of the new widescreen look.

The problem: A few days ago I decided to finally stop ignoring the Adobe Updater and updated all the programs in my Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro. My current Project File has never been the same 🙁

It’s weird, almost seems like a glitch. It’s almost as if my ‘Interpret Footage’ function stopped working properly after the update.

For instance, if I start with one of my original, unaltered NTSC 4:3 Project Files like so:

I would then right click it in the Project pane, go to ‘Modify’>’Interpret Footage’, etc:

    https://i50.tinypic.com/2a6lctk.png

The normal result would be that the pixels of the image would actually reconform into a widescreen shot and fill that same sized pane completely (aka no more empty edges on the right or left hand side). The bald fighter would look slightly distorted (not a bad distorted, but enough so that he fit into a widescreen image). Just a little stretched out to fill the extra space in the frame, but nothing weird looking. Premiere usually does a great job of changing this footage to widescreen. Here’s an example of how this footage fits in the frame once it’s been Modified: (note, different footage than previous images, but same idea)

Unfortunately, after the update, this is what I now get instead:

As you can see, rather than reconforming the pixels to fit a widescreen image, all Premiere Pro does is add some black filler on either side of the same image. This occured suddenly to all of my footage on the timeline. So now, rather than all of my footage fitting perfectly inside the player frame, my timeline footage ALL looks like this:

Before this latest Premiere update, that image of a fighter walking through a crowd was widescreen and filled the whole player window. Now, it is NTSC with some black bars on the side. And when I check it’s file in the Program window by clicking ‘Interpret Footage’ on it again, it says that it is conformed to DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9. But clearly something is wrong here, and this update has caused the Interpret Footage function to stop working properly in my version of Premiere.

I’ve tried many things to fix this such as starting a new project altogether, etc, but nothing has worked. This function does not work properly for any of my projects now. It’s almost as if Premiere ‘forgot’ how to do it.

My only surefit option is to do a Time Machine on my mac to before the Premiere update….but, if I can avoid that it would be nice since my last backup is a shameful long time ago. I’ve also thought of trying to re-install CS6 suite…but damn that’s not going to be fun.

Anybody else have any other suggestions as to how to fix this glitch?

Thanks Dennis for your suggestion. I tried both but unfortunately neither one fixed it.

Will keep those two steps in mind for future bugs though, thanks.

    Any other suggestions?

    [Kyle Cox] “Any other suggestions?”

On the more extreme side… uninstall Premiere Pro, run the Adobe Cleaner Tool (on the website), reinstall

Less extreme – trash prefs and cache again, restart computer, start Premiere Pro, start new project, import your old project, Do a save.

Let me know how it goes…

    Thanks for your response Dennis,

Tried both, but neither worked. When I create a new project, the ‘Interpret Footage’ function glitch still carries over to the next project.

It seems this is related to the update (v 6.0.2). I uninstalled my Production Premium, ran the CS6 cleaner and then re-installed after a restart. Upon opening, my footage was back to widescreen as desired, and my Interpret Footage function worked.

I then tried to re-apply the update. And what you know–once it was finished, I opened Premiere and my footage was back to a 4:3 ratio again…not cool!

Will be re-uninstalling everything tonight and will be keeping plain ol’ version 6.0.0 until Adobe puts out another update! (Which hopefully will be soon).

I honestly don’t think it’s a bug from Adobe but something going on in your system. However, I’d request that you try and post the project (or a portion thereof) online somewhere and contact me privately and let me have some Adobe techs look at it.

Hoping this offer still stands, Dennis, as I’m having a HELL of a time with Premiere at the moment!

At first I figured I’d just not update until I finished my project…but now more and more bugs are happening. Frequent crashes only when working within the Project Panel (the window defaulted on the lower left corner where I can browse through the footage files I’m using in my Timeline).

I have saved some error reports and also sent them to Apple. The final straw came when I got a LOT of work done on my project, definitively saved (I’m an OCD saver…I KNOW I saved multiple times that night)…then came back 2 days later and all that progress is not there, including MUCH time spent organizing my Project Panel (creating new bins, placing files in these bins and numbering them, etc). VERY irked right now, and upset that I can’t get ahold of any Adobe Tech Support over the weekend.

I’m worried about attaching it here in a public place, because I’ve put a lot of time an energy into this project. Is this something you could still privately help me with, and in that case, could I send you a copy privately via email or whatever method you prefer?

    Hi Kyle,

A couple of quick things as I’m headed to the airport in about an hour…

    1) you can get in touch with me privately by leaving a comment on my blog (blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/) or twitter (@TheGenesisProj). From there, I can email you and we can exchange data.
    2) Don’t bother sending data to Apple about Premiere Pro as it won’t get to us. If you get a crash dialog from Premiere Pro though, DO send it.
    3) It is the week of NAB, so while I aim to be as helpful as possible, this is a very difficult week. Just want to be honest here. 😉
    4) Given the kinds of problems you have you might want to include your apple system profile when we exchange data.
    5) In the absence of any other data, you might want to deactivate/uninstall your Adobe suite, run the Adobe cleaner program to erase any detrious bits, restart and reinstall.

    Cheers,
    Dennis

Thanks for the advice! Have fun in Vegas, a few of my professors are going so I’m aware of it and totally understand that you’ll be ‘busy’ for the next few days hah.

So today I brought my project and all of its subsequent media to a different Premiere suite on at my place of work. I wanted to test it out on another computer and see if it was my Premiere causing the issues or if it was a corrupt Project File and/or media.
Unfortunately, it seems to be the latter, because my ‘serious error’ messages when utilizing the Project panel still occurs even on a completely different Premiere Pro setup. I’m hoping that there’s still some way, any way to recover my timeline into a new project, I’m sure we’ll discuss that later (I’ll be googling it in the mean time).

Also, I’ve tried uninstalling, completely cleaning and re-installing the Adobe suite more times than I care to think about…even have gone so far as reformatting my hard drive several times over this issue, but still the exact same results (seemingly corrupt project file, but also can’t update my version of premiere without new bugs).

I will be in contact with you shortly, and can provide you the Premiere crash dialogue. One question – when you asked for me to send my ‘Apple System Profile’, did you just want the main, basic specs under System Report, or do you want the whole shabang? And if you want the info for everything, what would be an easy way to export all this info into a sendable file? I’ve never sent anyone a system report before.

Thanks again for your quick reply, and have fun at NAB. Wish I was going.

    Hi Kyle,

Try these two things and maybe it will help.

    First this: two tips
Then, after restarting the computer, open and save a new project. Then import your old project into it, save it and see if that helps at all.

    Cheers,
