In photography we use custom made ICC Profiles to insure that colors are correct on the monitors, printers, scanners and cameras. If everything is properly calibrated and profiled then everything matches.

Is there an equivalent standard for camcorders and video? I know I can profile my TV and projector, but in Vegas how can I be sure that all colors are correct.
Is there more than just Preset White Balance? Can profiles be built to an International Standard like ICC “International Color Consortium”?

It depends on if you are working with SD or HD.

If you are working in SD you want to be sure to use a calibrated broadcast monitor to adjust your colors. A broadcast monitor (like your TV) is very different than a computer monitor. The procedure involves running SMPTE color bards through the monitor and calibrating the luminance with the pluge and color balance using the blue gun switch (all broadcast quality monitor should have blue gun switch). If you Google “calibrate ntsc monitor” you will find a wealth of tutorials on the procedure.

If you are working in HD you can use an LCD monitor that has been properly calibrated using a hardware calibrator. I use the Datacolor Spyder 3 Elite but there are others. These devices will build a profile that gets loaded into your graphics card to properly adjust the colors on your LCD display. You should recalibrate once a month. Then you can use the Vegas Pro preview option: Windows Secondary Display with that saved profile to judge color accurately.

Color Bars and How To Use ‘em is one of the best tutorials I’ve ever come across.

Thanks John, Is a calibrated LCD computer monitor usable? I use an XRite Color Munki to profile the Apple Cinema Display. I’ve used an XRite Eye One Display2 with CALMAN software to calibrate LCD TV’s.

[Greg Barringer] “Is a calibrated LCD computer monitor usable?”

Only for HD. Vegas Pro allows you to preview using a secondary LCD display connected to your computers display card. It will even load custom profiles for the monitor when you preview if you want.

This cannot be used for SD.

Yes, I have dual 23″ Apple Cinema LCD Displays and I’ve used one as a secondary Preview. It works very well. Do I have to do anything special in Vegas to have it use the ICC profile created by XRite? It uses the Profile in all the photography programs automatically just like your Spyder3.

John, I saw in Preferences how to set the second display for the profile I created. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

You’re welcome. You can also right-click the video preview window and get to the same preferences.
