    Where do Adjustment Layers fit into the order of internal processing in AE?

    And what about stacking Adjustment Layers? How are those processed? I have about 40 4K Adjustment Layers stacked into a comp and it’s absolutely brought AE to its knees.

    That is correct. Adjustment Layers create a duplicate of the layers below them.
