Internal Raid Card
Posted by Chad Braham on September 17, 2010 at 4:21 pmOk, so I searched and read posts over the past weeks on this forum and others, and it seemed that the CalDigit Raid card was the way to go. But, I just learned that it won’t work with my brand new MacPro 8-core. I have to make a purchase today!
I don’t get it, what internal raid card are you guys using in your new mac pros? Is everyone just using external eSATA raids?
Thanks for your help, I’m a little panic-y right now.Chad Braham replied 15 years, 7 months ago 8 Members · 9 Replies -

September 17, 2010 at 4:43 pmJust to clarify, do you need a RAID card that will create a RAID using the hard drives in the internal drive bays of your Mac Pro?

September 17, 2010 at 4:44 pmYes. Preferably, I’d like a card that would allow me to have an internal raid, and connect to an external eSATA enclosure too (similar to the CalDigit Raid card).

September 17, 2010 at 4:54 pmI feel your pain we had a 8 core 2008 psu blow today which has a apple raid card – it was an opportune time to buy another box – bought a new 6 core and we will send off the old one to get replaced then put it back into production – thought I could jam in the raid card but no go – managed to jam in 3 x fresh drives raid it via disk utility and we were up and editing – when the othere box comes back I will just jam the raid card back in that – if you have the drives install and stripe

September 17, 2010 at 6:35 pmI think it was Zane who suggested that unless I needed a raid other than raid0, that there was no need for an internal raid card…
I’m running an internal 3 drive raid0 set up in Disk utility

September 17, 2010 at 9:16 pmQuit jamming things in… Gently insert them and your computer will last a whole lot longer.

September 17, 2010 at 9:44 pmHa Ha David, the cheeky smile in your profile pic says it all.
But jam rhymes with RAM, more of it equals quicker!

September 17, 2010 at 11:23 pmJust recently purchased a new 6-Core Westmere and my old HighPoint SAS/Sata raid controler won’t friggin’ work with the new MP designs. Nice right. We had just bought it to replace another HighPoint card that went bad after several years of brutal labor. The new cards to get are the Aceras and the Attos. I went with the Acera as it was available in town. Had to copy material off the existing raid and copy back onto the new one but speeds are nearing 985 MB/s. Using a iStorage 16 bay SAS Expander chassis but also works on an older 8 bay chassis with great speeds too. The Acera’s are the 1680 series and the 1880 series and the Atto is the R380.
Lots of raid experience if you need any questions answered.

September 19, 2010 at 1:49 amThink you mean Areca instead of Acera. My vote is NOT for any HighPoint product. Support is non existent!

September 27, 2010 at 4:11 pmThank you for your help everyone. Sorry for my late response – I was out of the studio for several shoots.
Don: I like the ATTO card you suggested because it has the two ports, that would allow for future expansion. iStorage was one of the enclosures you suggested, but is there another brand you could suggest? In fact, does anybody else have enclosure suggestions that work great with Highpoint or ATTO raid cards? I have to place my order through macsales.com, and they don’t carry the iStorage brand.
Side question, there used to be a salesmen at OWC that people on this forum recommended for FinalCut setups. Is there still a name out there people are using?
