Internal or External SSD editing
Posted by Mark Bennett on April 27, 2019 at 5:41 pmHi everyone,
I am trying to buy an new iMac 2019, and decide between the 1TB SSD or the 512GB SSD. My question is this: would FCP work faster if I kept the entire project on the internal SSD as opposed to an external SSD (the Samsung T5)??
I just can’t seem to find a clear answer on this. Thanks for your help.

April 27, 2019 at 7:05 pmIt probably won’t make much difference because both are fast. The internal will likely be faster than any external, however, I doubt you’ll see a difference.
One advantage to keeping the libraries internal, is that if you are running Time Machine, you get a back up automatically. However, the same can be achieved through other methods. Regardless, I would recommend the 1TB SSD so you’ll have space if needed.
In addition, I would recommend against bringing the media into the library. Leave it linked “in place”. In that case, your media might be on the external SSD and the FCPX library could be either internal or external. If external, at the end of the session, you could also copy the Library to your internal drive as a back up. Or the other way around.
I personally have libraries on both internal and external drives. Of course, if the library is on the same external drive as your media, then the project is portable if you need to use different machines.

April 27, 2019 at 7:56 pmThanks, Oliver. Yes, leaving files in place instead of the library is something that I’ve been doing recently. Your post makes a lot of sense. I’ll have the extra storage space if I need it.
Thank you.

Did you get the 2019 iMac? I am presently using a 2015 iMac, but I’m now considering the 2019 updated version. Just wondering what configuration did you choose and how you have found it. My most demanding requirement is to be able to edit UHD Slog or HLG H265 clips from a multi camera shoot and then export as H265.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,

July 30, 2019 at 1:15 pmI got the 512 of SSD storage and the i9 with the 580x graphics. It’s editing everything very smoothly in final cut – 4K log footage, 10bit. I also edit h265 easily. I’m using a Samsung T5 with no issues.
