I am shopping for a media drive to use with my mac for large editing projects. I am wondering if I should get a second internal drive or an external drive.

Are their any pros and cons between the two?

    Thanks for any help.

A second internal drive is handy and wireless, but if your comp gets nicked you lose everything.

External drives such as LaCie Extreme or G-Tech are very reliable (make sure you get Firewire 800 if you are doing anything higher than DV).

Or why not go for both. Drives are so cheap these days. Keep all your media on your second internal, and then back up to the external. Then you are covered.

Someone told me that having two internal drives can be risky. If one of the drives gets corrupt or damaged, it will cause the second drive to go corrupt as well.

    Any truth to this?

[Caton Clark] “Any truth to this?”

Haven’t heard that before. Perhaps you’re referring to the fact that if you have the 2 internal drives configured with RAID 0 (both drives acting as one) and one drive fails the media on the other will not be accessible. But there won’t be anything wrong, physically, with the drive that did not fail.
