    Hi,
I’ve just received my new Power Mac G5 Quad, with 4GB Ram, and an internal 250 hard drive. Which is the best internal and external hard drives to add to my system?

    I’ve thought:
    1. For internal 500GB Deskstar 7K500 SATA Hitachi GS
    a. My thinking is to use this for video, what else might be better?

    2. Then to add, 2 external hard drives, one for audio, other for graphics.
    a. Thinking about the Medea’s G-RAID, 500GB FireWire 800 storage unit.

Is this the best way to go?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jon

    Hi Kevin,
I have about 10 hours of Amazon/Pantanal wildlife footage, shot on a Canon L2 and Fugi M221E Hi-8 tape, I want to edit. Footage was shot some 12yrs ago and only now do I have the time to get to it. Will need to convert analog tape to digital format for storage and FCP.

    Thanks,
    John

I’d really be looking to invest in SATA at this point as it’s much faster than fw800. These firewire solutions do have the advantage that you can take them to a client or friend’s Mac, plug it in, and show him/her your entire project.
So, if you don’t go internal or external SATA, I might look at a TrayDock. The nice thing is you buy the unit and then you can buy seperate hard drives to put in it. I’m also going to use it for archiving to hard drives in this way. You’re supposed to be able to hot swap, but I haven’t tried that yet. Here’s a link:

An X-serve RAID is definitely NICE. But my feature request for the RAID guys would be that there were a “half-rack” X-serve alternative at half the price, no? 😉

So back to the initial question: So you’ve got 8mm footage you are going to transfer, right? I guess you need to ask yourself if it’s worth it to go to a res greater than that of NTSC. Is it 16:9? How does the raw footage look? Can it be upconverted?

So if you are gonna stay with DV NTSC, an additional 500 GB drive would be a good start. External SATA storage via a PCI card is the most stable after that. I would like the option to have a RAID in case you needed to finish in DVC Pro 50 or Uncompressed. HD might be out of your budget, but for that you’d need a pretty hefty investment in one of the larger arrays, like the aforementioned X-serve RAID or a third party RAID: Huge, MEDEA, etc.

With DV Material, a FireWire 800 drive is probably going to suit you just fine as an alternative. I’d put it on a separate bus by using a PCI Card with FireWire 800 inputs available.
