This is a repost…I am focusing on getting the most versatile for either internal or external.

I am researching analog to digital converters and came across this recommendation by Mr. Rofrano (Canopus ADVC-300) in a recent post. Upcoming projects now dictate that I own my own converter and would like to get some input as to getting the best internal or external converter for under $500.00. For this particular model the only major complaint I have seen is the inability to disable the filters and that there are only three settings for them. I’m not sure if this is a significant drawback or not. Are internal capture cards a better option, what are the pros and cons? I’d like to have a good array of connection options to utilize and not be caught without later on. The Canopus ADVC-300 sells for around $400.00 and their top model sells for about $1400.00. I’d like some real world application experience suggestions. As always thank you all for taking the time to help.

I saw your last post but since I was the one recommending it I thought that I was exempt from answering your question. 😉

One more advantage of the external AVDC-300 is that it can work without a computer. That means you can use it to dub tapes or dub tape to DVD with time timebase correction and not tie up a PC. If you do get an internal card, make sure it has TBC because old tapes will probably need it.

Exempt? 🙂 Sure… I have been holding off on getting into the world of converting old videos to digital but as I am finding out there is a huge market for this type of work. Those that are middle aged are realizing that their parents are getting on in years and want to have something to remember the days of old. I had done the research on the one you suggested and wanted your input as well as any others whom might have other suggestions. Invariably I find with most things that after I own it for a while I realize there are things that I wish I had known prior to buying it. You know the what I mean, “Oh that model does not work with XYZ and you now need this WTZ as well..” MOst likely I will get both and internal and an external, any recommendations for an internal, besides just having TBC?
Thanks for your help and time John.
