  • intermittent dropped frames on 2 drive raid.

    I have:

    G5 2.3, 2g mem/FCP 4.5/Aurora PipeStudio/Seritek1v4 internal/two SATA SeaG 300g 16cache in an apple striped software raid to 550gigs.
I have also tried 2 Max 250g striped as well. all new equipment and updated drivers

    Work flow:

Beta deck component to PipeStudio Uncompressed capture at about 20 MB/sec. I benchmarked the raid with FWB DriveTest at a sustained
write of 60MB/sec and a sustained read average of 75MB/sec.

    Problem:

I get a random ‘dropped frame’ stop of capture all the time. So I press the Try again a couple of times and it ramdomly decides it will capture
the section even a long piece of a minute or two. I have played back multiple streams in FCP uncompressed and unrendered at no problem
but the capture is giving me headaches because I have to babysit batch capture and keep pressing try again. It always errors when I first start
the batch but I thought that was because the drives were spinning up. but it does it even after that on small 3 sec captures and long ones as well.
But then I can keep pressing try again and it sometimes decides a 1 minute piece is no problem and moves on to the next small piece only to
error again. Rhyme or Reason is undetected here and I have tried other drives and a different raid card(laCie) as well with same results or worse.

    Questions:

Is this work flow suppose to work? Does anyone else use this kind of setup without problems? Does anyone capture Beta through a PipeStudio
Uncompressed with a 2 drive array instead of a 4 drive array? I’ve updated drivers, Firmware, versions.
Thought I was going to beat the Big external 4 drive array system cost with the 2 drive internal, Am I a dreamer?

Thank you all who read and ponder…whether you have a comment or not these boards help us all eventually, thank you for them.

not clear – do you have your system software living on this internal raid setup as well? If you do, that would be the 1st culprit I’d look into.

The system software is still on the 250g drive that came with the G5
For those that may wonder how I have an internal raid + the system disk
I have setup a mount on the base of the G5 behind the two big fans for
extra hard drives similar to the Swiftdata 200 but I used standard drive
mounts modified by a dremel tool to make them attach to the base plate
which is attached to the G5 base.
Thank you for the possible culprit Charlie, Have you heard of a 2 drive array
working fine for betacam uncompressed capture?
