  • Interlacing Problem???

Posted by Jim Sanders on August 26, 2008 at 8:19 pm

Our suite has a lot of annalog equipment that has been coverted to SDI using Miranda. When I digitize from our Broadcast BetaSP PVW-2800 I use AJA Kona3 and I choose AJA Kona 525 29.97 10 bit as my capture into FCP.
When I play the footage back (on the Mac Pro) in the FCP time line and view footage on my Apple Cinema HD (progressive) LCD monitor the the zooms and pans all look very shuttery / jittery. My fist thought was that this is happening because I am watching interlaced footage on a progressive monitor. I then send the signal back out to through the BetaSP and watch it on our NTSC monitor and it still looks jittery. And when I master to tape it records the jitterness as well. Could this be an interlacing problem? Can anybody point me to some solutions or explaination?
I am sure it’s something pretty simple and an easy fix (I hope).

    Thank you
    Jim

Yep, sounds like your fields are reversed. If you’re in NTSC you should be in Lower Field Dominance.

Be sure to select the AJA 525 10bit Uncompressed as your Easy Setup and it will change everything all around to lower field. Then double check your A/V settings to ensure your Capture and Sequence are set to Lower Field.

What do your raw clips say in the Browser under Field Dominance?

We use a Sony J3/902 deck here which feeds SDI directly out of the deck for all our BetaSP captures and have no issues with fields here.

Walter, I will be heading back into the editing suite later this week and will check that I am using Lower Field Dominance and I will also follow your other suggestions.

Thank you very much for the quick response.

I’ll keep you posted to how it all went.

    Thanks again.

Walter, as I look through the settings, the only place that I can find a selectable pull down menu for field Dominance is in the Sequence settings. I can not seem to find a selectable pull down menu in the Capture settings. However, when I did check the Sequence sttings it seems like the default is Lower Field Dominance (LFD) and I checked my footage item properties / log and saw that they show that they were captured as LFD. It seems like I may have to perform a more scientific test based on the information you provided me. Some of the footage has been in the can for sometime and I am not sure how we originally had our settings??? Just a little perplexed.

    Thank you

    Jim
