It may sound like a stupid question but I’m a bit concerned about interlacing. it’s one problem that keep popping up while i’m doing transfers, dvds and editing. So the questions may sound stupid but I’d like to resolve them once and for all.

On interlacing formats I’ve grown to expect jaggies sometimes from the interlacing. Usually I ignore it so long as it doesn’t show up on the boradcast monitor. I’m using an Aja Io box which outputs both fields at once when I pause so I’m not surprised to see the image flickering if I pause on movement. Is this the correct approach? When should I worry about field dominance issues and when is it normal?

Also when I render to mpeg2 video the interlacing still often shows up on the computer monitor. I know the it won’t show up on a tv but what’s the best way to reduce it if the dvd is to be played on a computer? Should I deinterlace it in compressor of FCP first?

Interlacing may not be your problem, if your footage was shot on film then you are likely dealing with pulldown, which cannot be removed by deinterlacing.

If it is video footage, then you can deinterlace in FCP or in Compressor as you encode. Otherwise you need to use Cinema tools or After EFfects to remove the pulldown.

I used to work in an agency where everything had pulldown in it, I always had to remove it so that the spots would play clean in Powerpoint. I used AE and rendered out at 24p.
