Interlaced/Pixel Ratio Issue

I have a 23,976 1280×780 progressive quicktime file, that I need
to make ready for NTSC and PAL broadcast.I have tried at least a hundred settings for rendering, but no matter
what I do, I cant get a good interlaced version out of sony vegas, that preserves the 16:9 aspect ratio (by now I really dont care anymore if its letterboxed or not, I just would be happy with a version that doesnt have this shitty interlaced flickers and preserves the 16:9 ratio).please guys, Im goin insane with this programm….

March 10, 2009 at 10:25 amHave you tried using the HDV 720-24p (1280×720, 23.976)) project setting and then rendering to AVI as NTSC DV Widescreen and PAL DV Widescreen? This is all you should have to do to get good results.

Yes I have tried that, but I really dont like the quality of it.
It gives me a 600mb avi file (for a 3 min music video), which qualitywise is so much worse than for example a quick time animation (100 percent, size of abt 4 GB) rendering. Also the colors change a bit when rendering to DV Widescreen NTSC/PAL, which also kinda messes up my color correction.I have 4,7 GB space for a DVD delivery, so Im trying to deliver the best quality possible. Picturewise the quicktime Animation render looks just fine, but the pixel aspect ratio becomes 0,9.. no matter what I do and also I cant avoid the interlace flickers (aghhhh).
Why does Sony Vegas do this to me?

Well… SD is never going to look as good as HD.

That’s correct. DV is 13GB/hr or about 200MB/min which is 600MB for 3 minutes.

Quicktime Animation is lossless. There will be no degradation in quality.

What format does the delivery have to be in? A playable DVD (in which case MPEG-2) or is the DVD just the biggest media you can send but the content can be just a file.

Quicktime Animation assumes square pixels. If you are using non-square pixels you must change the resolution to compensate. For example NTSC DV Widescreen 720×480 PAR 1.2121 should be rendered at 873×480 PAR 1.0000 (720 x 1.2121 = 872.712).

I think you need to check what format the broadcasters will accept.

The channel wants to receive a Quicktime file (on a DVD) with the highest quality possible. The file is supposed to be 720×576 interlaced
for PAL. (I need the NTSC Version for another Satellite Channel, that wants Quicktime, 720×486 interlaced)What do I have to do, to get a decent interlaced version without interlaced flickers in this resolution from Sony Vegas? (God, I tried a million settings)

OK, try this:
Start by using the HDV 720-24p (1280×720, 23.976) project setting. This is very important. Drop your video on the timeline and go to the render dialog and choose Quicktime 7 as the Save As type and press the Custom… button. Under the Video tab select the proper Frame size (NTSC DV or PAL DV) and under Video format select either DV/DVCPRO – NTSC or DVCPRO – PAL. That is probably what they are looking for.
So that’s: File | Render As… | Quicktime 7 (*.mov) | Custom… | Video
Frame size: NTSC Standard (720×486)
Video format: DV/DVCPRO – NTSCand
Frame size: PAL DV/Standard (720×576)
Video format: DVCPRO – PAL~jr

DVCPRO PAL/NTSC doesnt work for me, looks qualitywise like a youtube upload when I render it.
I figured how to render the finished file to widescreen PAL/NTSC with quick time pro. It renders the final broadcast safe file (uncompressed quick time or BMP) to animation or BMP and AAC codec (that sounds better to me than PCM, although that is supposed to be loseless).
It gives me a filesize of abt 4,0 GB and has a great quality.
Is there any specific reason why you assumed they would want a DVCPRO file from me?

Yea, most broadcasters want Betacam SP or Digital Betacam tapes which are DV. Panasonic’s DVCPRO is like Sony’s DVCAM and is what most SD ENG cameras shoot and what you watch every day on SD TV. The quality is exceptional and I’m not sure why you think it’s like YouTube. What did you watch it on to determine this?
If they said that you can use any codec you want then Uncompressed or Animation will yield the highest quality because they are both lossless formats. Animation will yield a smaller file because it uses lossless compression. That gives the broadcaster the most information to work with and they can recompress it to whatever format they need for broadcast.
