interlaced to progressive conversion workflow
Posted by Michael Nikitin on June 11, 2009 at 6:20 pmHello everyone,
If I’m shooting in 1080i and the delivery format is 1080p, is there any particular workflow that would give me the best conversion results? Any particular settings/tweaks I should be mindful of?
Any insight would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

June 11, 2009 at 8:56 pmWhat are you delivering 1080P to? Is it for a film out or digital cinema print? What 1080P frame rate do you need to deliver to?
What type of 1080i are you shooting? Can the camera shoot at 1080i with a 2:3 pulldown? What camera is it?

June 11, 2009 at 9:00 pmHi Russ,
It’s for a web video, hence the progressive requirement. We’re shooting with a Canon XL H1 at 1920X1080i, at 24 fps. -

The Canon will record 24 fps over 60i by adding some sort of pulldown. I’m not familiar with the camera, but there are two types of pulldowns that cameras use, 2:3:2:3 or 2:3:3:2. If it’s a 2:3:2:3 pulldown, just remove the pulldown using Cinema Tools. If it’s a 2:3:3:2 pulldown, then just remove the pulldown as you capture the footage.

June 12, 2009 at 4:54 amThanks for the info, Russ. Will look into XL H1’s pulldown particularities.
I should add here that, so far, I have been unable to capture the footage I’ve shot, period. FCP freaks out, and is unable to find the deck (which happens to be my camera.)
I tried trashing the FCP settings and restarting everything; switching the codec/capture format (from Apple Intermediate to ProRes), HDV firewire and simple firewire (the one I’m using is a 4 to 6 pin) — same result.
Any ideas why this could be happening?
