Interlaced ProRes 422 QT shows “field order none” in Fcp/

Not a big problem:
FCP gets the field order wrong quiet often. Just set it in the browser to the right field order: Upper First.
Done. That’s it.

By “FCP sets it wrong”, do you mean that the field order is sometimes displayed wrongly, or that FCP actually changes the field order and that it therefore needs to be changed manually back to the correct field order (in my case upper field first)?

Another video guy told me that the reason that FCP (in Item properties) shows “none” for the field order, is that there is no flag in the video file that says “I have upper field first”. In this case, there should be no need to manually set the upper field first in the Browser. Or… is this necessary in order for FCP to treat the video file correctly when I add the file to a sequence?

No, FCP does not change the field order, it just interprets it wrong.
If your original footage is interlaced HD, you need to set it to UFF.
If it was shot progressive, field order is None.

So, if the original video file is interlaced HD with upper field first (in my case ProRes 422 1080i50)), and I add to a sequence with the same settings, when I export the sequence with “current settings”, the exported ProRes 422 file will have the correct field order, namely upper field first. Right? (In this workflow I just ignore the wrong field order info in the “Item properties”? What you are saying is that there is no need to change the field order (set it to upper field first in the Browser). The file is correct, it is just interpreted wrongly and therefore displayed wrongly, but it IS correct? Forgive me for being so detailed here, but it is important for me not to end up with wrong field order, because I can’t control my exported file on an interlaced video monitor in my setup.

Basically, I think, you would not necessarily have to change it in the Browser,
but if it happens to me, I do it, juts to keep things in order. (That’s the German in me 😉
But it’s easy, just select all clips in questions, right mouse click on the field order tab in the browser and set to None.
