interlaced MXF Broadcast Export creates severe issues
Hi everyone,
I just ran into a super annoying issue with interlaced MXF exports in DaVinci. (See photo attached).
Initially I exported a ProRes HQ file (interlaced) and everything looked perfect. I uploaded it on my clients very own platform where it get’s transcoded in their house format (XDCAM HD 4:2:2 (MPEG 2@ML, HP/Long-GOP, 50 Mbit/s))
<font face=”inherit”>That’s when we noticed the problem for the first time. I ran some additional tests and exported various MXF codecs, all with the </font>same issue<font face=”inherit”>. So interlaced+MXF really doesn’t seem to work.</font>
The edit is in a mixed interlaced/ progressive timeline (Canon C500 Mkii (i) / GH5 (p) / DJI Phantom 4Pro (p)) Some of the C500 footage is stabilised and I read somewhere that stabilisation could cause issues in interlaced footage, but even with the stabilisation taken out the issue remains. In Premiere, with the same files, I have none of these issues whatsoever.
I even took the ProRes file, imported it in Premiere and exported it then as MXF – same issue which I find very strange.
Noteworthy, this issue doesn’t seem to affect all clips. First of all it’s only the interlaced clips that are affected and secondly it’s only some of those clips. I took all effects off all the clips and just exported in LOG. The issue remains. I don’t know what else to do.
Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Any idea what can be done about it?

have you tried going straight to xdcam 50? I master to it all the time…very common on my part of the world. It is possible some of your sources are being interpreted incorrectly, although i’m not sure why the prores wouldn’t show them up as well, unless you have your prores set to deinterlace source clips? Perhaps the second pass of output is using the wrong field as the dominate field. It is usually upper in my world, not sure where you are at.

The clip must have the wrong field order. In clip attributes try and change it from the default upper to lower and see if that fixes the problem.
What I see is classic wrong field order interpretation.
EDIT: In a situation of mixed progressive and some interlaced, my preference is to deinterlace and create a progressive timeline. Then if the broadcaster requires i, I render that at the last minute.
And as Glen suggests, try exporting the XDCAM codec directly after changing the field order on the problem shots and see if that then looks OK
