  • Interlaced after encoding, but not in project

Posted by Ryan Moyer on May 7, 2009 at 3:53 am

I have finished working on my first project with Vegas Movie Studio recently. However, when I actually output the mp4 file (also tried with mpeg2) it comes out badly de-interlaced.

When I am working with the footage in my project and watching it in the preview window, there is no interlacing. But after I encode it, interlacing shows up in the final output. I remember having the exact same problem when I used to use Pinnacle Studio and it was just a matter of settings, and clicking a checkbox fixed it. Is the solution as simple here? Again, the footage does not appear to be interlaced when I am working with it, but comes out interlaced after I output the file using the “make movie” option.

The solution is to select a render template that is progressive (not interlaced) or change the template you are using to be progressive (i.e., Field Order = None). The problem is that Movie Studio doesn’t enable the Custom button on most render types like the Pro version does. You’ll have to find a type that will let you turn of interlacing. (I don’t have Movie Studio so I don’t know which ones will work or not)

Yeah, I am able to click the “custom” button the template I’m using when I select “Render As”, however the is set to “Upper First” and it is grayed out so I cannot change it.

However, if I go to the project properties I can change the field order to “None (progressive)”, and if I render the movie using the “Make Movie” button I would think it would use this option, but it still comes out interlaced.

Perhaps I will try creating my own template.

Whelp, nevermind, I got it figured out now. All I had to do was change the video format from Memory Stick to AVC and then it let me edit the field order box.

I set it to “None” and it worked like a charm, no more interlacing. Thanks!

Great! Glad you got it worked out. Yea, it doesn’t matter what the project properties are… rendering will always use the render properties. When you think about it, this make sense so that you can render an interlaced version for DVD and a progressive version for the web without changing the project properties.
