He really didn’t appear locked in though, in the video. He added that gaming card (that I don’t really care about) along with cables to attach it and he said it worked “flawlessly”.
When you add modules without cables into this machine they are going to just slide in there and click easy. Seems like less to go wrong when doing it. Btw his added cables looked tight and bent around to me but I’m guessing they will be fine.

I don’t know which card he put in, but from the Apple website a Radeon Pro Vega II MPX Module costs a mere £2,520 – $3,298.
I don’t know how it would actually compare, but the most expensive standard fitting Nvidia card I could find is an ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti ROG STRIX OC 11GB – £ 1,299, $1,700

I think it’s less about 8k and maybe more about 3D in 4K?
When I got into 2K systems, the fun trick was being able to make fake zooms or punch-ins on projects that were outputting to SD resolution If you didn’t;t push it more than about 10-15 percent, you could get away with it..
When I got 4K capable systems, the same trick looked even better, punching-in some shots and doing false zoom, dolly and pan shots on deliverables output in 2k.
If I can shoot and edit 8K, this is wacky, and I wouldn’t normally do it unless the gimmick was the point, but, I could just leave that 8K lens on full-wide, and re-frame every sho and camera move later in post. Now, you and I would see the lack of parallax change, so that’s still not perfect. But, there are a couple of music videos that use this trick. The earliest one I know of was I think done by REM,

But I saw one just last week that featured Jay and Silent Bob as background characters in some band’s video, based around a high overhead wide shot of some chaos happening outside in the parking lot of a convenience store. Their gimmick was, not only were they punching in and out of a wide master shot, the master shot was itself compositing the same band members doing different actions all over the frame, maybe ten or more different setups that all synched together. The higher starting resolution plus the heavy composing and probably some motion-controlled camera, combine to great effect.

For me since I’m stuck (for better or worse, mostly better) on OS X, the question is whether there is an advantage for the Mac Pro versus iMac. I calculate that you can get 3 iMacs during the time you use the Mac Pro (depends on if you sell or how you calculate the value of passing the iMac down to another use). I figure this is around an 8-10 year time frame. So over that time, how will the capability of the iMac improve? Where Xeons use raw power to achieve gains, the Core chips use targeted processing (for example decompressing H.265). Yes it’s possible to upgrade the the Mac Pro. But costs for that are undetermined and may be limited by the architecture of the system.
For me, who doesn’t need cards and works at 4K, I’m not convinced the Mac Pro is the better option.

This is an excellent question, also with regard to the iMac Pro vs Mac Pro. You must consider the resell value of your iMac or iMac Pro when every 3 yrs you upgrade to a new one, and compare that to the upgrade cost of the Mac Pro.
There are cases where the available GPU horsepower of the new Mac Pro is very useful. I just spent several weeks finishing a doc with lots of contributed low-light GoPro footage. It had to be used, as there was no other alternative. This required a vast amount of Neat Video processing.
The very latest version of Neat Video is about 2x faster, and the internal sizing tool picks an optimized mix of CPU, CPU+GPU or all GPU. For my 10-core Vega 64 iMac Pro it was all GPU. Despite all that it was extremely slow. In my workflow that is very rare but if I did that a lot I’d consider a Mac Pro.
The iMac Pro has lots of ports – 4 Thunderbolt/USB-C, 4 USB-A, and 10-gig E. I need that frequently when I’m working collaboratively and must connect to the NAS and offload a stack of SSD cartridges.

The iMac Pro is due for an upgrade and there are theoretically chips available, but as usual we don’t know anything. If an iMac Pro was upgraded with the new Xeon and a significantly upgraded GPU I might get one.

I would also consider the time involved in doing all that. Trying to sell your computer and moving all your information from one computer to the other. I’m excited about the nMP but not so much the time involved in migrating everything I have over : ) Don’t really want to do that a bunch of times myself.
