Interesting speed tests with new Shotput Pro (v 2.1.2)
Just FYI, for anyone that runs Shotput Pro and has recently upgraded to the newest version (2.1.2). The new version offers better threading, which Imagine says should speed up transfer times with multi-core computers. But that’s true only to a certain extent, depending on how many cores your machine has. I have a Mac Pro with 8 cores, and found that the multi-threading in v2.1.2 actually delivered SLOWER transfer times than earlier versions. The guys at Imagine think the Mac has so many cores that multithreading “overloads the I/O” of the machine, reading the data off the P2 cards.
Fortunately, you can run v 2.1.2 of Shotput Pro in either multithreaded or single thread mode. There’s a new menu called “Preferences” which lets you choose which mode to run. Here are speed results transferring the same cards in single and multithreaded modes. As you can see, on my Mac (with a PCD35 5 card reader), there’s a huge speed improvement when running *SINGLE* threaded, which is a little counter-intuitive. You might want to do some tests to see which mode delivers the fastest results…
Single 32GB E Series Card Offload
Multithread mode=456 secs
Single thread=314 secs
That’s around a 50% improvement!Four 32GB E Series Card Offload (2 full cards, two half-full cards)
Multithread mode:
Card 1: 1218 secs
Card 2: 1256 secs
Card 3: 1750 secs
Card 4: 1752 secs
That’s 29 minutes, 12 secs before the last card finishes.Single Thread mode:
Card 1: 499 secs
Card 2: 585 secs
Card 3: 903 secs
Card 4: 905 secs
That’s 15 minutes, 5 secs…..almost twice as fast as Multithread mode delivered.
