Interest in Sony Vegas Pro
Quick introduction. I used to work in the broadcast/production house industry 8 years ago as various roles (production assistant to scriptwriter). After that I work in IT industry, specifically Linux system administrator.
Recently a few of my friends who are still in the broadcast/production industry approach me with a problem. All of them are complaining about FCP render issue. Most of them are doing documentaries, travel show, talk show and etc. Basically programs that don’t require much animations and graphics. But is seems FCP is taking a long time to render. They said even to preview, FCP needs rendering time.
So they ask me for IT perspective for solution. As usual I search the Net for solutions ranging from FCP settings to FCP render farm. From what I gathered, it seems FCP is real slow with rendering. And the general concensus is that Sony Vegas Pro is real fast with rendering and the NLE editor of choice for quick jobs especially documentaries.
Before I present my conclusion to my friends, I would to ask a few questions to you guys/gals:
1) Is my general assumption about FPC sucks at rendering and Sony Vegas Pro kick ass at rendering correct?
2) Is there something wrong with their FCP setting? (I know I should be asking this in FCP section, but I think you guys/gals are a cooler and more pragmatic than FCP fans)
3) What should I take note when I observe my friends doing their job. Workflow, hardware spec, their source files, their output format?
4) With Sony Vegas Pro, what is the optimum workflow? Should convert the all the source files into some format first (I think FCP is like this)?
5) Nvidia GTX 570 is really expensive. Can I go with lower GPU to enjoy the benefit of GPU assisted rendering in Sony Vegas Pro 11?
I’ve been roaming in here for 3 days reading as much as I can. To be honest I’m overwhelm by the amount of information. And confused by the variety of video formats, codecs and etc. Is there any howto for dummies to get started with Sony Vegas Pro?
Lastly, I can’t believe the quantity and quality of info in this forums 🙂 You guys rock!
Peace and love from Malaysia.
