Intensity outputing intermittenly
Posted by Luke Tingle on August 21, 2008 at 7:32 pmI recently got a new 2.8GHz 8-core Mac Pro and a new Intensity card. I installed the software then the update 2.0.
When monitoring in FCP6 the signal disappears and then reappears randomly. When it does appear for a few seconds it looks like its in a 4:3 aspect ratio (should be 16:9 HD) and the HDTV (Visio 22″) reads the signal as 1080i…?
I’ve tried everything I can think of. Anyone have issues like this before?

August 21, 2008 at 9:11 pmHi Luke
What type of footage are you using with your intensity card? Also, do you connect your hdmi tv to the card and turn the tv on before powering up your system?
Another good test is to load some footage into blackmagic deck control , which does not require any setup for playback. This is a good way to eliminate the possibility of final cut causing any problems.

August 21, 2008 at 10:29 pmI’ve tried numerous codecs, from DV to HD uncompressed, using existing media and using the “Bars & Tone” generator in FCP. I got it to playback for a bit longer (10secs at a time), but it still drops out.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the blackmagic deck control came with the Intensity.
Is there no control application for the Intensity? Or a way to determine its current video output?
Thanks

August 22, 2008 at 9:40 amHI Luke
Firstly my apologies, you do get a great little capture playback application with the Intensity card, however it is called Blackmagic Media Express, not Deck Control. Blackmagic Deck Control is the application that comes with the Decklink family of cards on the Mac.
So please use Media Express to see how your Intensity outputs. Media Express also requires no settings for playback, just open a Quicktime movie with suitable encoding (Uncompressed, motion JPEG etc), and you should see output on your Screen. Where is your source footage coming from? Is it a camera capture or existing media on your system?
You will also need to ensure that your Media is a supported format of the Intensity, such as 1080i50 or 720p50. You can find a full list of supported formats for the Intensity cards here:

If you still do not have any luck getting an output, it may be worth contacting the Blackmagic support office for your region, and refer them to this thread, to aid in your trouble shooting process.

August 22, 2008 at 10:54 pmThanks for the reply.
I did try the Blackmagic Media Express software with the sample color bars that were included and I still have the same issue. I’m thinking its not software related. I contacted support and they’re trying to figure it out too.
Thanks.

August 30, 2008 at 2:37 amJust in case anyone runs into the same issue. I returned the card and the new one works perfectly. Must have been faulty.

September 3, 2008 at 9:10 pmI had similar problems and returned the card twice on one of my 2 identical mac pros. The third card is working perfectly while the other was great from the start. There seams to be a high rate defective manufacturing with these cards.
