  • Intensity HDMI Capture with HDV Deck Control?

SORRY FOR CROSS POST ON FCP

    Hello all,

Trying to bring in some HDV footage originally shot on the Canon XLH1 at the 24f setting.
I have a Black Magic Intensity Pro a Canon HV20 (which supports the 24f material) and I’m trying to capture via HDMI to ProResHQ at 23.98. I want to do this with deck control, Black Magic say it can be done.
When I get the Audio/Video settings set up “correctly” with Device Control: HDV Firewire Basic NDF, and Capture Preset: 1920×1080 ProResHQ, I open Log and Capture at which point the notice comes up:

“To Capture HDV source material, both the Capture and Device control presets must be configured for HDV; otherwise, to capture in another format, both must NOT be configured for HDV”

Is there any way of overriding this? Any other tricks out there? I’m trying to get material in for a doc film and I need to be able to have reliable or at least somewhat reliable TC.

There is said to be some (though minor realizing its already compressed) quality gained by capturing via HDMI, which was the reason for going this route initially, but only if I can have TC.

Are there any user experiences with this? Any ideas short of abandoning this workflow and buying a Convergent design HDV to HD-SDI box and a Kona card?

    Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I have not been able to capture HDMI using HDV or DV deck control with BM Intensity.

I get the same message you do.

RS422 works but you need a deck that has it.

I am trying to log & capture some HD footage from a Canon XH A1 to my Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 and I am getting the exact same message: “To Capture HDV source material, both the Capture and Device control presets must be configured for HDV; otherwise, to capture in another format, both must NOT be configured for HDV”

Did you ever solve this problem? i downloaded the Aja Software codec v4.0, as I read that worked for someone else, but it didnt work for me. Did you use a codec? Any help is greatly appreciated!

No, I never really got that to work, and went a different route, but a couple things to try and keep in mind.

I haven’t done this myself but I’ve heard some on the cow have been able to capture via the DeckLink while using DVNTSC device control. You would change the settings in your camera to be DVNTSC but leave the component, or SDI output setting as HD. In FCP you would want to make a custom preset. DVNTSC device control, and the capture setting of your choice. ProRes, DVCProHD, etc.

Also, if you are using a Blackmagic Intensity Card, then I don’t see a reason to use AJA codecs. Use the capture presets that the Intensity comes with.

In FCP 6 you can capture HDV-> Prores on the fly depending on your tech specs, hardrive size, speed and amount you want to load, that could be a viable alternative…..if you had FCP 6 of course.

What are the specs of your system?
    How fast are your drives?

    cheers,
    Ted
