I have a Dual Core Intel Xeon mac and work on short form broadcast graphics. I have recently been getting more and more requests to do HD work and want to work out an efficient and cost effective workflow. I plan to monitor the work by exporting to Apple Pro res and viewing through Final Cut Pro. I would also like to be able to see a direct output of After Effects CS3 running at full 1920x1080i on my Sony CRT HD monitor that has component input. Although it is a consumer grade monitor with no settings for over and underscan I feel that I can trust it colourwise and could if need be get it professionally set up.

I have read great things about the Intensity Pro card and it seems very cost effective, but wanted to see if anyone else is using this in a similar workflow by monitoring from the component output. I don’t have an HDMI equipped monitor and even if I did I would need an expensive one to get full 1920x1080i. Also I don’t trust LCD monitors much in terms of both colour correctness and motion (blurring) artefacts.

If anyone has a similar experience please reply to this thread

    Hi Richard,

The Intensity Pro’s analog output is broadcast quality and will match the one on our top of the line Multibridge Eclipse. 🙂

    Thanks Kristian

may I ask then why the card is so cheap in comparison to the other HD cards. What are the disadvantages over say the HD Pro extreme. I really need a card only for output to a monitor. I don’t do a great deal of ingestion from tape and if I do it’s on my other machine with an SD Blackmagic card. Even then I usually ask for quicktimes on a drive or dvd.

    Hi Richard,

It’s lower in cost because it does not have SDI and RS422 so if you use the HD Extreme card, you’ll have SDI inputs and outputs as well as deck control via RS422.

Do also note the formats supported by HD Extreme and Intensity:

    Thanks Kristian,

that explains it. Since I don’t have any decks with SDI and I really would only use it to monitor out I think the intensity would be a good choice. I have a Blackmagic SD Decklink Pro on my G5 and monitor using the component outputs to a Sony PVM-14L2. This is great for colour accuracy.

Thanks again for the info. I’ll do a little more research. I am in Melbourne where would be the best place to perhaps see a demo of the intensity card in action?

    Hi Richard,

Your best bet is to ring up New Magic in NSW. They will be able to help you find a reseller with a demo set up.

so are the component outputs for analog video only?
Will the Intensity let you lay a program out to tape in HD?
