  • Intel Mac crashing when quitting AE

Getting our 8 core Intel mac set up (10.4.10, AE 8.01, 9 G ram) every time I quit the app, AE either takes about 2 minutes to quit, or just crashes. Does not seem to be project specific. I can just fire up the app and then quit without even creating a project and its doing the same thing. Any suggestions?

i would try the usual tricks…

    – delete ae pref file (users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects 8.0/after effects pref)
    – use disk utility to repair permissions
    – use disk utility to check disk (you will need to boot from osx install disk and run disk utility from there if the startup disk needs repair)

    if things are still bad…

    – run the hardware test (instructions printed on osx install disk). run the extended test.
    – uninstall and reinstall cs3.

still luck, call adobe tech support… it will probably be faster than reformatting the drive and doing a clean install of everything, which would be my last suggestion.

Happens to me as well with most of the Adobe apps (AE, PS, FL, BR) and Firefox. Takes forever to shut down or they simply crash. When an app closes, shouldn’t it literally close? I mean, you could pull the plug and it would all shut down instantly. 😉

I have an old G4 (dual 1 Ghz PPC) at home. If I close and app on it it’s almost instant. Is this an Intel thing? Amazing how fast the Mac OS can start up these days. Shutting down seems to take forever. Using brand new a Quad 2.66, 4 GB RAM, OS X 10,.4.10

I have done hardware tests, repaired permissions, disk check. ALl turned up nothing. I have noted that it takes awhile to spawn the additional aelinks for the other processors, and asome time to quit them (viewed thru activity monitor) and AE does not like to be bothered when its doing that. If it keeps up, I’ll reinstall cs3 next…

i have an earlier 4-core (3ghz, 4gb ram) at work. i notice it takes a little time to start up the aelinks the first time (as advertised) but it’s not too bad. ae occasionally crashes, but again its nothing unusual.

i have noticed that when i work on some projects with audio, or use expressions and audio to generate effects, it seems to have an unusually long lag for previewing….

i think i would call adobe and see what they have to say. if adobe’s suggestions don’t work, i would call apple, it’s not unheard of to get a bad mac.

I’ve been having the same problem with a 2.66 Dual Core, OS 10.5.5 and AE CS3. It’s not crashing, but taking forever to shut down. I haven’t been able to determine the cause.
