Intel G5’s?
Posted by Donato M. rondinelli on May 26, 2006 at 2:50 pmAnybody have an idea when the new Intel G5’s are coming out? We’re getting another editor in two months & I need to put a system together. Not sure if I should wait or just go with a current Mac Quad. I called Mac & they couldn’t tell me anything. With my luck I’m sure they’ll ship 7 days after I buy one of the existing systems.
THANKS!

May 26, 2006 at 3:12 pmNobody who knows can talk about it and Apple will not say a word until it’s actuall revealed so it’s all speculation. Best guess is after the WWDC in August.

May 26, 2006 at 4:15 pmIf you need it now, buy now. As always Apple, does have a grace period. Although not that long, you do have the option to upgrade. When you have AppleCare/ProCare, they are a little bit more accommodating.
You will not be dissaponted with a Quad G5!

Couldn’t agree more – I wouldn’t expect the new Intel systems to be a quantum leap in speed like the laptops (they were, after all, still running G4 chips….) so if you get a quad you will have a fast system that is actually compatible with all current plug-ins, as opposed to a ‘rev 1’ intel system….
That’s the decision we made anyway…

May 26, 2006 at 5:14 pmThe speculation about Apple’s marketing strategies is worthless, I agree, but I disagree with the idea that the new models may not offer the same kind of giant leap that the new ‘Books did. All I can say is try running FCP on a MacBookPro (or Aperture or Motion) and compare it against anyone’s quad G5. the experience is a tangible and clamorous harbinger of what’s to come.
I say, buy a little old used dual G5 if you must have some raw power right now but I would not recommend buying a desktop machine until the Intels are out and you can actually sit down and play with one. You’re gonna be really sorry you bought early if the new desktop machines are even a slight improvement over the existing G5s. The potential for new and improved software is just too huge to ignore, too.
Just my opinion and it’s YOUR money.

May 26, 2006 at 6:29 pmYou also ask yourself if you want to buy the first generation of Intel chip Macs? I don’t. The MBP already as had some small updates.

Sure, there’ll be a speed boost from the G5. Thanks to Intel’s open roadmap, it seems likely that Apple will use the Woodcrest 5100 (server) chips in the new ‘Mac Pro’ desktops. Why? Only the Woodcrest chips (shortly to be renamed something snappy like core duo2 duo duo) support multi-processor setups – so 2 chips will be a dual-dual core setup like the quad. The Conroe (Duo Core 2) chips do not support multi-processor setups, so will probably be used in the lower cost ‘Mac Pro’s’.
Currently, that’s a quad 3.0ghz machine at best, albeit running core arcitecture, so we may see some speed bumps from universal apps – as we have seen on the MBP.
My point is that the speed difference is smaller going from a quad 2.5 to a quad 3.0 than you will see going from a single G4 1.67 to a Duo Core 2.16 (to compare top desktop to top laptop).
Speculation? Yes. Informed? Yes. And when you throw in the compatability issues between most plug-ins and intel macs, along with no Adobe universals for a while, it’s a quad from me….

May 26, 2006 at 11:22 pmBTW – That’s 2 x 3.0ghz Xeon/Woodcrest processors at $850 EACH. Won’t be a cheap machine with $1700 of chips (trade price) in it….
Slated Q1 ’07 are the ‘Kentsfield’ QUAD-core chips that promise us Octo-core (or something – anyway, 8 core) machines. Now THAT I can wait for.
God bless Intel and it’s transparent processes. Does take some of the fun out of guessing when the next Mac upgrades will come. Look out for a 2.33Ghz MBP in August running the Core Duo 2 chip (AKA Merom). That’s a 64-bit chip that uses significantly less power than the current Duo Core chips. Should be a quieter, cooler, faster MBP…

Good point Drizzt_G.
I’m new to Mac & still learning. I was one of the first to jump on the Quad. Big mistake. It’s been in the shop 4 times! Everything has now been replaced except for the steel housing. The local authorized Mac shop said they’ve been having problems with the quads. I haven’t heard anything on the COW about this so I’m assuming bugs have been worked out. I’ll go with the quad & hold off on the intel chips. I don’t want to be a beta tester again!-dMR
